Philadelphia Bike Share Program Becomes First in U.S. to Launch With Cash Payment Option

Technology Partnership With PayNearMe Ensures All Residents Can Participate in the Citywide Bike Share System

SUNNYVALE, CA and PHILADELPHIA, PA--(Marketwired - April 23, 2015) - Mayor Michael A. Nutter today launched the Indego bike share system, with PayNearMe as a partner to make Philadelphia the first city in the U.S. to launch with the option to pay with cash for their memberships. After signing up at www.rideindego.com, customers can pay for their membership at over 17,000 convenient retail locations throughout the U.S., including participating 7-Eleven stores.

Twenty-eight percent of Americans have little or no relationship with a bank, according to the FDIC. Indego's innovative partnership with PayNearMe works around those barriers by providing riders with the option to register sign up online and choose the "Pay with Cash" option at checkout.

Members can then print or send their unique PayNearMe payment code to their smartphone, walk into a 7-Eleven or other participating store, and hand both the code and cash to the cashier as if they are making a regular purchase.

The transaction is free and Indego is automatically notified of the payment as soon as the cashier collects it. Members receive receipts as proof of their transactions.

"It was important to us that any bike share system we built would be accessible and convenient to all residents in Philadelphia, regardless of where they live and how they choose to pay," said Mayor Nutter. "That's why we are putting 700 bikes in 70 stations throughout the city's neighborhoods and implemented PayNearMe as an option for members to conveniently pay in their own neighborhoods."

"Indego is an example of how a small change to a system can have a big impact," said Danny Shader, PayNearMe's founder and CEO. "Most bike share systems require a credit or debit card to sign up or require cash users to go out of their way to pay at a payment office. PayNearMe enables riders to pay once a month with cash, in their own neighborhoods. This level of inclusion makes it easy and convenient to get around the city and stay healthy while doing it."

Indego30Cash, Indego's 30-day membership plan for cash users, is available for purchase through www.rideindego.com. For $15 per month, members have access to unlimited one-hour rides and receive a key that allows them to access a bike at any Indego station throughout the city.
