Fresenius Medical Care Responds to Earthquake Devastation in Nepal

HONG KONG, CHINA--(Marketwired - May 8, 2015) - Recent events in Nepal have justifiably sent shockwaves through the world, with people in all countries united in their shock and sadness. The earthquake that caused such destruction on April 25 measured 7.8 on the Richter scale and hit two of the country's most densely populated cities; capital Kathmandu and second largest city Pokhara.

The effects have been devastating. As of today (May 8) officials have reported that around 7,800 people lost their lives in the disaster, with a further 16,500 injured. Almost 140,000 homes have been destroyed and another 600,000 seriously damaged says the United Nations, resulting in hundreds of thousands of people becoming homeless and at the mercy of the country's dangerous monsoon season.

Fresenius Medical Care has responded to this situation immediately. Our prime focus is to provide assistance to the Nepalese people as they face such overwhelming hardship. In order to support this effort Fresenius Medical Care Asia-Pacific has donated 10 dialysis machines and disposables including dialyzers, bloodlines etc. as an immediate measure to help those injured and in need of dialysis treatment.

This equipment is of vital importance as there are so many people with crush injuries who require renal replacement therapy. Unfortunately these needs aren't currently being met due to Nepal's limited number of dialysis machines. This dire situation has been made even more critical as a considerable amount of their much-needed equipment has been destroyed.

Mr. Roberto Fusté, President and CEO of Fresenius Medical Care Asia Pacific, stated, "As THE RENAL COMPANY, we are fully committed to assist the Nepalese population to overcome this difficult situation by providing technology, resources and support to those who have been affected and have experienced life threatening situations. Furthermore, we will continue to collaborate with local partners to rebuild their community and health care services."

Note: In the early stages of any catastrophic emergency, relief agencies need money more than anything. Tax-deductible donations to the Red Cross can be made by visiting www.redcross.org. Donations to the Red Cross can also be made through a payroll deduction.
