Patented Dot Hill Technology Extends Advanced Replication and Data Protection Benefits to Multiple Storage Systems

Innovation in 102nd Patent Allows Any Intelligent AssuredSAN Storage Array to 'Pull' Snapshot Data From Multiple Storage Arrays

LONGMONT, Colo., May 11, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Dot Hill Systems Corp. (Nasdaq:HILL), a trusted supplier of innovative enterprise-class storage systems, today announced that it has been awarded a patent for a remote replication feature that enables organizations to leverage the affordable capacity of entry-level storage systems to significantly reduce the cost of storage deployments.

The innovation, now integrated in Dot Hill remote replication software, allows a Dot Hill intelligent AssuredSAN® storage array to act as an initiator system that can "pull" snapshot data from multiple target storage systems, including AssuredSAN arrays not equipped with replication capabilities.

The company's 102nd US patent numbered 8,990,153, joins an extensive list of Dot Hill innovations associated with the company's suite of data management services. Dot Hill remote replication software enables IT professionals at small to medium sized businesses to solve many of today's critical data protection challenges by building complete solutions for business continuance, disaster recovery and regulatory compliance. The software works between AssuredSAN arrays to replicate data between sites, protecting valuable data assets.

Dot Hill's remote replication software builds on RealSnap™ snapshot technology. RealSnap provides the ability to create point-in-time copies or backups of disk volumes with instant restoration of data to any captured (snapshot) point in time. Since RealSnap only copies data that has changed to disk, it can virtually eliminate backup windows.

"Our extensive list of data management service innovations are an important part of our 100-plus patent portfolio," said Ken Day, chief technology officer, Dot Hill. "This latest breakthrough allows systems administrators to use replication to tap into the intelligence of their Dot Hill systems and the capacity of their snapshot-enabled entry-level storage systems. This 'pull' method is more versatile than traditional approaches where the target system is required to 'push' snapshot data to the initiator system. This also allows a Dot Hill AssuredSAN storage system to effectively manage multiple snapshot-enabled target systems, maximizing entry-level storage assets."

Dot Hill's patent portfolio builds on the extensive intellectual property behind Dot Hill AssuredSAN and AssuredSAN Pro solutions, which deliver rock-solid, wicked-fast solutions to customers and OEM partners.
