Multiple Project Wins Highlight InterDigital 5G Leadership

Company's Leadership of European POINT, RIFE and XHAUL Projects, Coupled With European Commission Socioeconomic Research Project Win Announced Today, Underscore InterDigital's Continued Leadership in Global Mobile Standards Development

WILMINGTON, Del., May 14, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- With today's announcement of InterDigital Europe's selection to drive the groundbreaking European Commission 5G socioeconomic study, InterDigital, Inc. (Nasdaq:IDCC) now totals four major 5G research project wins this year. The announcements place InterDigital among a handful of companies and research institutions that have secured multiple 5G milestone project wins this year, and place the company among the leaders in core wireless innovation for 5G – a position that InterDigital has now occupied for multiple generations of wireless.

As announced separately, London-based InterDigital Europe has been contracted by the European Commission to conduct a socioeconomic research project to inform the development and rollout of 5G in the European Union. InterDigital will work alongside experts from Real Wireless, Rethink Wireless, Tech4i2 and Trinity College, Dublin to gain an understanding of the economic and societal impact of 5G and the necessary infrastructure requirements. This includes possible innovative applications for health, transport, social services and commercial opportunities.

InterDigital is also involved in three projects underway, which are funded by Horizon 2020, the €80 billion European research and innovation program. These include:

  • XHAUL: A milestone win for 5G Infrastructure Public Private Partnership (5GPPP), XHAUL aims to develop a 5G integrated backhaul and fronthaul transport network to flexibly and dynamically interconnect the 5G radio access and core network functions. Ultimately, this will help achieve the very low latency that will characterize the 5G networks of the future.
  • POINT (iP Over IcN the betTer IP): Based on the hypotheses that many current IP-based applications can run 'better' on an ICN-based network than on current IP networks, Project Point aims to develop information centric networking technology (ICN) in commercially viable ways.
  • RIFE (aRchitecture for an Internet For Everybody): Project RIFE will increase the efficiency of underlying transport networks to solve the societal challenge of delivering Internet access to those who cannot afford it. This will be achieved by harnessing unused transmission capacity, combined with placing content caches and service functionality closer to the user.

"InterDigital's heritage of core wireless innovation, which is now carried forward by our team of almost 200 engineers worldwide, is highlighted by these significant 5G project wins. Our company has now been at the forefront of multiple generations of core wireless R&D, from 2G, 2.5G, 3G and 4G/LTE and LTE-A, to now 5G. Those 5G efforts have also led to an expansion of our footprint to include Europe and South Korea. We'll continue to work to expand our presence and deliver technologies and solutions that benefit the entire industry, as well as the enterprises and consumers who benefit from those capabilities," said William J. Merritt, President and CEO of InterDigital.
