InterDigital Featured in Senza Fili LTE Unlicensed and Wi-Fi Report

WILMINGTON, Del., May 14, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- InterDigital, Inc. (Nasdaq:IDCC), a mobile technology research and development company, today announced that the company has been featured in the report, "LTE Unlicensed and Wi-Fi: Moving Beyond Coexistence," produced by Senza Fili in collaboration with RCR Wireless and released on May 12, 2015.

The report contains an in-depth interview with InterDigital's Jim Miller, Director of Radio Standards, which focuses on the evolution of the role of LTE unlicensed, Wi-Fi and their coexistence. Also discussed in the interview is the company's LTE unlicensed strategy and support for the standardization efforts for LAA-LTE.

In the report, analyst Monica Paolini also discusses the important future technology with experts from market-leading players, including Qualcomm, Alcatel-Lucent, Ruckus Wireless and XCellAir – a startup launched by InterDigital earlier this year. "For mobile operators, LAA-LTE has major implications, giving them a new way to use the 5GHz band – generally associated with Wi-Fi – with a technology that integrates better with their current networks," said Paolini.

"We take a technology-agnostic position, because we feel that, even though unlicensed spectrum is free to use, we want LAA-LTE to use it fairly. If it is not fair to Wi-Fi, LAA-LTE will end up occupying a niche market, where it can only be used in certain spectrum where Wi-Fi isn't. That would not be good for it, and would make it a fringe technology that we wouldn't necessarily need to be further involved in," said Mr. Miller on InterDigital's approach to both technologies.

InterDigital's extensive work on the integration and coexistence of Wi-Fi and cellular networks provides a good vantage point to assess the potential of LAA-LTE. "As a pioneer in enhancing mobile wireless technology, the development of LAA-LTE has been an area of focus for InterDigital," said Dr. Byung K. Yi, Executive Vice President, InterDigital Labs, and Chief Technology Officer at InterDigital. "In particular, the company is focused on making sure it is defined to treat Wi-Fi and anything else in the spectrum fairly."
