It ranked second on Amazon's "Musculoskeletal Diseases" bestseller list and twelfth on the "Pain Management" bestseller list.

Dr. Brian Dower, Chiropractor, can now add "bestselling author" to his resume. The chiropractor recently channeled his passion for whole body wellness into a chapter in the book "Headaches, Pain, TMJ and Sleep Disorders: Toronto Health Professionals Share their Insights to Attain Overall Wellness." The book is available for download as a Kindle e-book on Amazon.

Dr. Dower was asked by the book's editor to contribute a section focused on wellness and the connection between stress and pain. While some authors focused specifically on the subjects of headaches, pain, TMJ and sleep disorders, Dr. Dower used these symptoms and disorders as launching points to discuss the overall concept of wellness.

"The Western model of 'health' is different from the concept of wellness," said Dr. Dower. "My focus in this book is how human physiology interacts with environmental factors, such as stress, to create pain. For example, headaches may very well be a response to stress. One of the goals of the chapter was to ask the reader to appreciate the difference between focusing on root causes, rather than symptoms, of poor health."

In his book, Dr. Dower discusses how wellness care is different from today's concept of health care and disease management. Dr. Dower emphasizes the importance of proactively caring for the mind and body together.

"When the body is healthy, it can function in a state of ease," said Dr. Dower. "This means that all the internal organs and systems work seamlessly together. Over time, without care, the body can fall into a state of 'dis-ease.' Pain is just one symptom of this disease state. Other symptoms include sleep disturbances, low energy, unexplained weight gain/weight loss and changes in mood. Anxiety and stress are contributing factors for a state of disease. Getting healthy is not as simple as popping some pills each morning. There are a lot more factors at play here."

As part of his section on wellness and pain management, Dr. Dower recommends a whole body approach to identifying and treating the root cause for illness and pain, rather than relying on medication to cover up symptoms of pain.
