DETROIT, June 8, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Through its grant-making to thousands of nonprofits each year, the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) promotes opportunities for people in communities across America to experience the arts and exercise their creativity.
The NEA recently announced that it will make a $20,000 award to Marygrove College for "Arts Engagement in Northwest Detroit: Celebrating Neighborhood Artists".
NEA Chairman Jane Chu said, "The NEA is committed to advancing learning, fueling creativity, and celebrating the arts in cities and towns across the United States. Funding these new projects like the one from Marygrove College represents an investment in both local communities and our nation's creative vitality."
Marygrove College will use in-place programs at the College to engage the community and provide a truly unique arts experience. "In partnership with Marygrove College OnStage! and the Institute of Music and Dance at Marygrove College, we are excited to highlight and collaborate with local artists," said Marygrove College Visual and Performing Arts Division Chair, Jordeen Ivanov-Ericson. "Our plan for community engagement is a yearlong series of arts events on campus and in the Northwest Detroit community, culminating in a Festival of the Arts, scheduled for September 2016."

OnStage! is a multidisciplinary, community-focused, arts outreach effort for children, adolescents, adults, and teachers within the metro Detroit region, with particular emphasis on the City of Detroit. Each season offers master classes, workshops, clinics, lessons, and public performances in music, dance, art, theatre, and literature. Nearly every element of Onstage! is offered for free or at minimal cost to participants. The program is produced and administered by Marygrove College's Institute of Music and Dance and the Division of Visual and Performing Arts.
