Boot Camp Offers Exam Prep for Certification in Geriatric Pharmacy

ALEXANDRIA, Va., June 10, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The American Society of Consultant Pharmacists (ASCP) announced that they will be running a Certified Geriatric Pharmacist (GCP) Exam Preparation and Recertification Boot Camp from July 31-August 1, 2015 at the BWI Marriot in Linthicum Heights, Maryland. This two-day workshop is designed for pharmacists who wish to become board certified in geriatric pharmacy, and for current CGPs who are in need of recertification credits.

As the number of older Americans increases, it has become more important than ever for pharmacists to demonstrate a specialty in geriatric pharmacy. Board certification is one way to demonstrate knowledge and expertise in this area; it shows that the certified pharmacist has special expertise that is beyond that of a licensed pharmacist. This credential may be useful in qualifying for a promotion with a current employer or in obtaining a job with a new employer. The CGP certification is given by the Commission for Certification in Geriatric Pharmacy. Pharmacists who meet the necessary criteria and pass the certification exam are entitled to use the designation "Certified Geriatric Pharmacist" and put the initials "CGP" after their name.

The 2015 ASCP CGP Boot Camp will help attendees to recognize the spectrum of aging through a discussion of physiological, socioeconomic, and pharmacokinetic changes, and the challenges these aspects of the aging process pose to making effective treatment decisions. The workshop will provide advanced pharmacotherapy cases as well as reviews of existing regulation to prepare attendees for the CGP examination. This workshop will offer up to 15 CGP recertification hours for those who are interested in recertification, or up to 15 hours of continuing pharmacy education (CPE) to all pharmacists.
