Ethicon Leading Laparoscopy Device Market due to High U.S. Obesity Rates

According to a recent report by iData Research, growth in the laparoscopic device market will exceed procedure number growth rates due to the continuing development of higher-priced multifunctional devices.

VANCOUVER, BC, June 23, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- via PRWEB - According to a recently published report by iData Research (http://www.idataresearch.com), various laparoscopic procedures in the U.S. continue to gain traction as an increasing number of surgeons continue to recommend this approach based on its notable clinical benefits. Many traditional surgeries are now often performed using laparoscopy rendering them more cosmetically beneficial to the patient. But the key benefits of laparoscopy are the reduction in recovery time following surgery, fewer post-operative complications, and overall reduced surgical risk.

"Laparoscopic surgery as a minimally invasive approach reduces average hospital stays with many successful procedures being performed in an outpatient setting," explains Dr. Kamran Zamanian, CEO of iData. "Therefore these procedures often end up costing significantly less than inpatient surgeries."

According to the latest iData Procedure Tracker data, the three states that had the highest number of laparoscopy procedures performed were California, Texas and Florida. Roughly a quarter of a million procedures were performed in each state. Over the last 4 years, the number or procedures has either remained steady, or increased across each leading state. Due to the high obesity rate in states like Texas, there has been a massive increase in bariatric sleeve gastrectomy procedures, which has become one of the most popular surgical methods of obesity intervention in the U.S.

In 2014, Endosurgery (Ethicon) was the leading competitor in the U.S. market for laparoscopic devices with nearly 40% market share. Ethicon generally prices its products above the market average, avoiding pricing wars altogether. The company led the ultrasonic segments and also competed in the segments for access, hand instrument, insufflation, direct energy, hand-assisted and closure devices, as well as that of gastric bands.

Despite intense competition from Covidien and Olympus in the market for tissue management systems, Ethicon continues to dominate the ultrasonic device market. As the market for closure devices increases with the number of laparoscopic bariatric procedures performed, revenue generated by this segment will continue to grow.

Other notable competitors in the U.S. Laparoscopy market include Stryker, Karl Storz, Richard Wolf, ConMed, Smith & Nephew, and B. Braun among others.
