Dot Hill Secures Patent for RealStream High Performance Software Technology

Key Innovation Helps Dot Hill RealStream Software to Triple Data Ingest Throughput for Heavy-Duty Workload Challenges Created by the Internet of Things

LONGMONT, Colo., July 15, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Dot Hill Systems Corp. (Nasdaq:HILL), a trusted supplier of innovative enterprise-class storage systems, today announced that it has been awarded a patent related to the company's RealStream™ software technology. Dot Hill RealStream software triples data ingest throughput1 while handling more than 5,000 parallel data streams for heavy-duty Internet traffic workloads.

Layered on top of Dot Hill's next-generation RealStor™ operating system, RealStream technology is available in Dot Hill AssuredSAN® arrays. RealStream software benefits "always-on" bandwidth-intensive applications across a variety of market segments by managing many simultaneous ingest streams with autonomic, real-time and predictive load balancing. Applications that generate this type of workload will become more common, increasing the demand for storage arrays that can provide predictive intelligence to prevent crippling data stream traffic jams.

"As we progress toward the era of the Internet of Things and the third platform, innovations that make a tangible difference in everyday performance are critical because real time matters," said Ken Day, chief technology officer, Dot Hill. "We developed RealStream software technology in response to the specific storage needs of customers in the areas of high-speed network traffic analysis and big data analytics. Through unique algorithms, RealStream makes it possible to handle more than 5,000 parallel data streams without compromising Quality of Service. This latest patent is a key element of RealStream technology which makes a difference in day-to-day operations for vertical market customers such as big data analytics, telecom and oil & gas."

The company's 105th US patent number 8,930,619 describes an innovation that optimizes how RealStream software handles data stream traffic in cache. Dot Hill's patented innovation overcomes this challenge by maintaining various statistics on sequential write-streams received by the storage controller and organizing write-data into as many full-stripe writes as possible.

This invention joins an extensive list of Dot Hill innovations associated with the company's suite of data management services. Dot Hill's patent portfolio builds on the extensive intellectual property behind Dot Hill AssuredSAN products, which deliver rock-solid, wicked-fast solutions to customers and OEM partners.
