Concurrent Technologies Corporation Team Awarded Patent for Magnesium Powered Water Purification System

JOHNSTOWN, Pa., July 28, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Concurrent Technologies Corporation (CTC) has been awarded a patent with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for the "Energy Generation System and Related Uses Thereof." Many years of work have finally paid off for the CTC team responsible for the Magnesium Powered Water Purification System: Mark Becker, Mechanical Engineer; Dan Markiewicz, Senior Principal Electrical Engineer; Michel McCluskey, Senior Design Engineer; and Michael Pollock, Senior Director, Advanced Concepts & Prototyping.

Energy is a critical component of modern society and is typically considered a necessity for health, hygiene, and communication, and as such is required for most devices and applications. In most environments, energy is readily available; however, there are many instances in which the required energy is not readily available, such as remote geographic areas, austere environments, disaster areas, and so on.

Similar to these situations in which access to energy may be limited, access to purified and potable water continues to face similar challenges. For example, military teams operating in the field currently travel with bottled water, which weighs in at 8 pounds per gallon. This practice is inefficient in terms of weight, cost and energy expended by the troops.

Enter the Magnesium Powered Water Purification System. "CTC developed the magnesium carbon battery, MagC, specifically for use with water purification systems," said Michael Pollock, Senior Director, Advanced Concepts & Prototyping and patent holder. "The MagC is an advanced metal-air battery that uses magnesium as a fuel to generate energy. It requires saltwater brine as an electrolyte, which it obtains from the reverse osmosis waste stream. This technical approach defines the uniqueness of the system."

MagC is excellent at powering reverse osmosis desalination. Deployable in less than 15 minutes, it is nominally designed to provide potable water for a 10 day mission for up to 40 troops. But that isn't all—the MagC is multi-functional. In addition to providing power to produce potable water, it can provide exportable power for a 10 day mission and produce Hydrogen, which can be used as a fuel source.

Compared with the most advanced battery technologies commercially available, MagC has approximately four times more energy for the same mass of battery—in terms of water production, it can produce four times the amount of water per unit weight than current battery technology.
