Population Media Center Texas Chapter Announces New Executive Director

BEDFORD, TEXAS, Aug. 4, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Texas Chapter of Population Media Center (PMC-Texas) has announced the hiring of Yvette Hanshaw as its new Executive Director. Officially filling the role in June 2015, Hanshaw is leading PMC-Texas's efforts to generate awareness and grassroots engagement in environmental and population issues at a state-wide level. Hanshaw has lived in Texas for the past 18 years and brings with her several years of executive and fundraising experience in academic, political, and nonprofit fields. "I'm thrilled to be serving an organization that moves the needle on such important national and international issues," said Hanshaw.

Population Media Center (PMC) is a Vermont-based international nonprofit that uses media to educate citizens about family and reproductive health, gender equity, and the benefits of small families for the environment. The organization produces serial dramas for radio, TV and the web and has worked in over 50 countries. In 2012, two Texans with a long history of civic engagement and concern for population issues reached out to PMC. The brainchild of environmentalist Trammell S. Crow, PMC-Texas works to educate Texans on how population growth, family planning, and environmental degradation have local and global impact.

"We are on the verge of seeing some of the more dramatic consequences that will flow from our growing regional, national and global population. This growth will impact our communities on a variety of fronts, requiring us to have an honest conversation about how we are preparing our communities, adapting our infrastructure, expanding our resource base, and addressing strains on our educational system, as we seek to confront the challenges that are ahead," commented Hanshaw. "I look forward to this opportunity and to building a statewide operation where we educate and engage thousands of Texans."

Bill Ryerson, PMC's President, said, "Yvette is a great addition to the PMC team. She's a change-maker who will bring new vision and direction to our work in Texas." In accepting her new position, Hanshaw said, "It is both a pleasure and a challenge to be working for an organization that is making such a profound difference in the world. Best of all, I get to work with people here in Texas who feel as passionate as I do about PMC's mission and programs."
