Earth Overshoot Day is August 13
Humans have already spent Earth's ecological budget for the year
WASHINGTON, Aug. 6, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Earth Overshoot Day marks the approximate date when humans have used more of Earth's renewable resources than the planet can regenerate in a year. This year, Earth Overshoot Day lands on August 13. Earth Overshoot Day gets earlier each year, as we continue to demand more and more of our small planet. Fifteen years ago, in 2000, Earth Overshoot Day fell in October.
Ecological overshoot is possible only for a limited time before ecosystems begin to degrade and possibly collapse, as we are currently experiencing through water shortages, desertification, soil erosion, reduced cropland productivity, overgrazing, deforestation, rapid species extinction, fisheries collapse and increased carbon concentration in the atmosphere.
