Updated Alberta Table of Formations Available

CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwired - Aug. 18, 2015) - Today, the Alberta Geological Survey (AGS), a branch of the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER), released the 2015 Alberta Table of Formations. This is an important reference tool for resource industries, academia, government, and the public to identify and name geological rock formations in Alberta.

"The 2015 Alberta Table of Formations is the most geologically accurate and extensive update of rock units compiled in 20 years," said Andrew Beaton, vice president of AGS. The updated version incorporates new knowledge of stratigraphic (rock layer) relationships of rock units in Alberta and brings the Alberta Table of Formations into alignment with the current naming practices of the North American Stratigraphic Code, which is an international scientific guide to categorizing and naming rock layers.

The AGS uses the Alberta Table of Formations to communicate current, accurate, and credible geological information about Alberta to decision makers, industry, educational institutions, and the general public.

The 2015 Alberta Table of Formations is available on the AGS website and the AER Products and Services Catalogue.

The AER ensures the safe, efficient, orderly, and environmentally responsible development of hydrocarbon resources over their entire life cycle. This includes allocating and conserving water resources, managing public lands, and protecting the environment while providing economic benefits for all Albertans.
