KLAS Rates Premier, Inc. #1 in Value-Based Care Consulting for Second Year in a Row

CHARLOTTE, N.C., Nov. 19, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- For the second year in a row, leading research firm KLAS has recognized Premier, Inc. (NASDAQ:PINC), a leading healthcare improvement company, as having the best overall performance in providing value-based care consulting services to support population health management.

In the November 2015 KLAS report, Value-Based Care Making the Shift: Who Can Help?, 86 providers from across the country evaluated organizations offering value-based care consulting services, scoring Premier the highest for its assessment and strategy work, which provides targeted guidance and best practices.

“What was once deemed a fad, value-based care and payment to improve the health of populations is now our reality,” said Wes Champion, senior vice president of Premier Performance Partners. “To prepare for the changes brought forward by new healthcare legislation, providers need help assessing their current state, identifying gaps, analyzing opportunities and implementing value-based care models. For years, Premier’s dedicated population health management experts have been successfully helping providers lead the industry in creating value-based care and other risk-bearing models.”

KLAS notes that Premier is being engaged the most to help implement government value-based programs and is well known for its ability to gain physician alignment and implement clinically integrated networks (CINs). Premier also received high marks for its strong relationship with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Further, KLAS states that Premier’s unique collaborative model connects providers to a community through which they can harness knowledge and experience to facilitate and build value-based care programs.

“Premier members are generating some of the most significant shared savings and quality gains when compared to other participants in CMS’s value-based payment programs, including both the Medicare Shared Savings and Pioneer programs,” said Joe Damore, FACHE, Premier’s vice president of population health management. “This recognition from KLAS further validates that Premier offers health systems and clinicians proven capabilities to create high-functioning population health models across the industry.”

Implementing successful value-based care and payment models requires claims analysis, care redesign, coordination and appropriate infrastructure. Premier provides population health data management claims analytics, benchmarking, performance improvement solutions and dedicated experts to support the development of effective value-based care and alternative payment model capabilities. This includes expertise to assess reimbursement scenarios, assist organizations in making financial transformations, and build financial models based on individual market dynamics, readiness, speed of transition and new value-based payment arrangements.

Several health systems have recently engaged Premier to develop and implement value-based care capabilities, including:

  • Adventist Health System, which has 44 hospital campuses and more than 8,100 licensed beds across 10 states.
  • SSM Health, which cares for patients across Illinois, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Wisconsin and includes 20 hospitals, more than 60 outpatient care sites and two ACOs.

In addition, Premier’s Population Health Management (PHM) Collaborative includes more than 400 hospitals and thousands of clinicians working together to measure quality, reduce the cost curve and improve the health of their communities. The collaborative is focused on enhancing quality and patient engagement, lowering costs, increasing physician alignment, designing and implementing value-based care and alternative payment models, and managing population health. Each area of focus is designed to support new payment programs, including the MSSP, the Bundled Payments for Care Improvement initiative (BPCI), patient-centered medical homes (PCMHs) and CINs. In fact, while 26 percent of CMS’s MSSP and Pioneer ACOs qualified for shared savings nationwide in performance year 2014, nearly half of the MSSP and Pioneer ACOs in Premier’s PHM Collaborative qualified to earn approximately $50 million.
