SRV participates in planning new Metro Centre and surrounding residential blocks in Kivenlahti, Espoo

SRV is further strengthening its position as a developer and builder of Helsinki Metropolitan Area transport nodes. The City of Espoo’s Trade and Competitiveness Division has reserved for SRV and VVO an area for the planning of the Kivenlahti Metro Centre. The Metro Centre, to be built around the entrances of the new metro station, will include an extensive residential block complex as well as office and commercial premises.

The Metro Centre will consist of four blocks. Around 76,000 square metres of housing and around 56,000 square metres of commercial, office and service premises as well as a bus terminal and a park & ride facility are planned for the area. Some of the housing will be implemented as tower buildings, in which commercial, office and service premises will occupy the lower floors of the towers and housing units the upper floors. A total of nearly 1,200 housing units will be built in the area.

The City of Espoo selected its partner for the project via an open application procedure. The plan submitted by SRV, VVO, Sito and HKP implements the development objectives set by the city. The plan includes a distinctive pedestrian centre, and the incorporation of the new area into the existing urban structure has been carefully considered. The area is highly reachable by all forms of transport, and the commercial, office and service premises are located so that customers can access them easily. The challenging location next to the Länsiväylä motorway has been taken into account in the positioning of housing construction.

“In line with the objective, the planning reserve application procedure provided an excellent start to the further planning of the area in cooperation with the SRV-VVO project group. The technically advanced proposal connects in an excellent way the old and future new Kivenlahti centre with an attractive pedestrian area, and utilises the commercial and business premises potential of this new metro terminal station.  The project group’s strong experience of correspondingly challenging development projects is reflected in the solutions.  This represents a good start,” says Kimmo Leivo, the City of Espoo’s Project Director.

“The Kivenlahti project is, exactly in line with our strategy, located at one of Espoo’s most rapidly developing urban centres and transport nodes. We are really delighted to be given the opportunity to participate in the development of the Kivenlahti area and in the creation of the new Metro Centre,” continues Jouko Pöyhönen, SRV’s Director, Project Development.

In the first phase, the new Metro Centre and its business terminal and park & ride facility will be implemented simultaneously with the Western Metro. Construction work at Kivenlahti will start after land use planning procedures have been completed, in 2017–2018, and the Metro Centre is expected to open in the early 2020s.
