Informatica Prevails in Patent Validity Challenge

Redwood City, June 03, 2016 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Informatica, the world’s No. 1 provider of data management solutions, is pleased to announce that the United States Patent and Trademark Office has invalidated two patents owned by Protegrity Corporation, both of which were the subject of a patent lawsuit claiming infringement by certain Informatica products.

United States Patents 8,402,281 and 6,321,201 related to data security systems for databases.  Protegrity sued Informatica and others for infringement of the patents in Connecticut in 2013.  Informatica successfully transferred the case to San Francisco, California and subsequently challenged the validity of both patents at the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) in Alexandria, Virginia. On May 9, 2016, the PTAB ruled that Informatica had shown “by a preponderance of the evidence” that the claims of the ‘281 patent “are unpatentable.”  On May 31, 2016, the PTAB ruled that Informatica had shown “by a preponderance of the evidence” that the claims of the ‘201 patent “are unpatentable.”

Katherine Haar, senior vice president and general counsel of Informatica, stated “Informatica has, and will continue to defend itself against these types of unfounded lawsuits. We challenged these patents because we believed they were invalid. The recent decisions by the PTAB confirm our belief. Informatica will continue to double-down on industry-leading innovation for our customers’ globally.”

The patent lawsuit remains on hold pending the outcome of any appeals that Protegrity may pursue.

Informatica is represented in both proceedings by John P. Bovich, Marc S. Kaufman, Jonah D. Mitchell, Doyle B. Johnson and Mark T. Vogelbacker of Reed Smith LLP.
