Elsevier Publishes "Snow Leopards," Part of New Series, "Biodiversity of the World: Conservation From Genes to Landscapes"

Also Introduces Two Other Veterinary and Animal Science Titles

CAMBRIDGE, MA--(Marketwired - June 30, 2016) - Elsevier, a world-leading provider of scientific, technical and medical information products and services, today announced the publication of Snow Leopards. The book is the first in a new series, "Biodiversity of the World: Conservation from Genes to Landscapes," edited by Dr. Philip Nyhus, which includes titles focused on specific species or taxa across disciplinary boundaries and spatial scales. Elsevier also introduced two additional new veterinary and animal science titles.

Snow Leopards was edited by Dr. Tom McCarthy and Dr. David Mallon, recognized snow leopard experts with more than 50 years of collective experience in research and conservation of the species. It is the only comprehensive work on the biology, behavior and conservation status of the snow leopard, long one of the least studied of the large cats. The book brings together the most current scientific knowledge, documents the most pressing conservation issues, and shares success stories in alleviating the broad threats that now jeopardize the long-term survival of this species.

"This book is the collective work of a cadre of dedicated and passionate individuals who believe the snow leopard deserves forever to be a living icon of Asia's high peaks," noted co-editor Dr. McCarthy, Executive Director of the Snow Leopard Program for Panthera. "With nearly 200 authors and 47 chapters, Snow Leopards covers a wide range of topics from ecology, threats, conservation success stories, new research tools and technologies and country status reports, concluding with an outlook for the species' future. I am sure this book will be of interest to everyone from armchair naturalists, students and range-state decision makers, to seasoned snow leopard conservationists."

"Snow leopards are one of the most secretive and least understood of all the great cats. Today, that changes with the publication of Snow Leopards," said Dr. Luke Hunter, President and Chief Conservation Officer of Panthera. "The editors have assembled a blue-ribbon team of specialists to produce the most comprehensive synthesis of available knowledge on the ecology and conservation of this iconic cat."

"This is an incredibly important book," said Peter Zahler, Coordinator for the Wildlife Conservation Society's Snow Leopard Program. "It has collected virtually all the most recent research and information from all 12 range states, covering biology, behavior, threats, and conservation activities for this mysterious and elusive big cat. This book will serve as the go-to reference work on snow leopards for decades to come."

In order to meet content needs in animal and veterinary science, Elsevier uses proprietary tools to identify the gaps in coverage of the topics. Editorial teams strategically fill those gaps with content written by key influencers in the field, giving students, faculty and researchers the content they need to answer challenging questions and improve outcomes. These new books, which will educate the next generation of veterinarians and animal scientists and provide critical foundational content for information professionals, are key examples of how Elsevier is enabling science to drive innovation.
