NEW YORK, Aug. 22, 2016 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Dr. Nikos Tapinos, Associate Professor, is the Director of the Molecular Neuroscience and Neuro-oncology Laboratory, and the Director of Neurosurgery Research at Geisinger Medical Center, has been selected to join the Education Board at the American Health Council. Dr. Tapinos will be sharing his knowledge and expertise in the field of molecular neuroscience, neuro-oncology, neurosciences, cellular regulation, brain tumor research, cancer stem cell migration, myelination, peripheral neuropathies, and epigenetics.

Dr. Tapinos became involved in medicine because of his strong interest in the nervous system. This inspired him to pursue a Ph.D. shortly after receiving his M.D. in order to make a difference in medical treatments with his research.
In 1996, Dr. Nikos Tapinos received his medical degree from The University of Athens in Greece. Subsequently, he pursued his Ph.D. from The University of Athens in 2000. In 2007, he completed his post-doctoral training from The Rockefeller University.
As Head of the Molecular Neuroscience Laboratory at Geisinger Medical Center, his day-to-day responsibilities include research regarding cellular regulation, myelination, and brain tumors. Geisinger Medical Center's campus includes a number of nearby facilities that provide a range of specialized medical research and hospitality services. Dr. Nikos Tapinos has spent eight and a half years within his current role and 15 years within the healthcare industry.
Dr. Nikos Tapinos is affiliated with The Society for Neuroscience, The Society for Neurochemistry, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He is also actively involved with the non-for-profit organization called Save the Children.
Dr. Nikos Tapinos is honored to have been a recipient of various grants for funding. He is proud to have been a recipient of grant funding from National Institutes of Health, Geisinger Clinic, PA State Cure Grant, SERAPH Foundation, InVivo Therapeutics, and CASIS. In addition, Dr. Tapinos is proud to have written over 25 peer reviewed publications in top scientific journals. Furthermore, the ability to share his knowledge by speaking publicly at multiple universities and scientific conferences.
Among his many accomplishments, Dr. Tapinos is most proud to be able to work with amazing and knowledgeable people within his lab. During his personal time, Nikos Tapinos enjoys playing basketball and exercising. He also enjoys spending time with his wife Penny, his son, Yannis, and his daughter Mary.
Starting October 1st 2016, Dr. Tapinos is joining The Alpert Medical School at Brown University as Associate Professor at the Departments of Neurosurgery and Neuroscience and the Director of Molecular Neuroscience and Neuro-Oncology Research Laboratory. His long term goals are to continue to keep growing his research projects in order to be able to create new treatments for brain cancer, demyelinating neuropathies and neuropathic pain within his lab. He also wants to connect with like-minded professionals for further research projects.
