NRI Cyber Patent and FRONTEO to Launch a Joint Project to Leverage AI for Patent Research

Aiming for Higher Efficiency through Collaboration between Lit i View PATENT EXPLORER and NRI Cyber Patent Desk 2

TOKYO, Oct. 26, 2016 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- NRI Cyber Patent, Ltd. (“NRI Cyber Patent”), and FRONTEO, Inc. (“FRONTEO” or the “Company”) (Nasdaq:FTEO) (TSE:2158), which provides big-data analytics services using its proprietary artificial intelligence (“AI”) engine, today announced that the two companies will launch a joint project aiming to leverage AI for patent research via the collaboration of NRI Cyber Patent Desk 2, a patent information search engine developed by NRI Cyber Patent, and Lit i View PATENT EXPLORER, a patent research and analysis system developed by FRONTEO.

It is estimated that 300,000 Japanese patents are filed every year. The research and analysis of the enormous amount of patents requires a significant amount of labor and high expertise.

The two companies are currently developing an efficient solution designed for different levels of patent research, such as prior art search and invalidity search. The solution combines NRI Cyber Patent Desk 2, which has been recognized for its sophisticated search and various review capabilities, with FRONTEO’s Lit i View PATENT EXPLORER, which streamlines patent search and analysis using its AI engine, KIBIT.

The collaboration of two research systems presents the following research flow:

Step 1. Patent filtering by NRI Cyber Patent Desk 2

NRI Cyber Patent Desk 2 narrows down a vast collection of patents through its highly accurate keyword and concept search functions.

Step 2. Intelligent scoring by Lit i View PATENT EXPLORER

The user first selects “training data” from the documents filtered in Step 1. Then the AI engine learns the user’s decision making process and assigns scores accordingly to each of the patents filtered in Step 1 from high to low by relevancy. The “training data” here refers to a patent which clearly specifies the features of an invention. For example, if the user wants to invalidate a patent of others (“target patent”), he can set the target patent as the “training data”, and the research system can find similar patents which can be used to invalidate the “target”.

Step 3. Reviewing by NRI Cyber Patent Desk 2

The user can review the documents sorted out by scores with the versatile browsing function of NRI Cyber Patent Desk 2.

Following the research flow above, the user can then focus on text review of the top 10-20% ranked patents that most likely follow the user’s decision making process on its relevancy, hence significantly improve the research efficiency. Additionally, the AI engine, KIBIT, continues to learn through the user’s feedback which further improves the accuracy and efficiency of the patent search.
