Rush Enterprises, Inc. Reports Third Quarter Results


  • Revenues of $1.096 billion and net income of $14.9 million
  • Used truck over-supply negatively impacting new truck sales
  • Medium-duty results impacted by timing of deliveries and competitive market

SAN ANTONIO, Texas, Oct. 26, 2016 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Rush Enterprises, Inc. (NASDAQ:RUSHA) (NASDAQ:RUSHB), which operates the largest network of commercial vehicle dealerships in North America, today announced that for the quarter ended September 30, 2016, the Company achieved revenues of $1.096 billion and net income of $14.9 million, or $0.37 per diluted share, compared with revenues of $1.294 billion and net income of $19.9 million, or $0.48 per diluted share, in the quarter ended September 30, 2015. 

"A sluggish energy sector, choppy freight environment, excess Class 8 fleet vehicle capacity, and low used truck values continued to negatively impact our new and used Class 8 truck sales and parts and service revenues in the third quarter," said W. Operations

Aftermarket Solutions
Aftermarket services accounted for approximately 67.0% of the Company's total gross profits, with parts, service and body shop revenues down 6.7% as compared to the third quarter of 2015.  The Company achieved a quarterly absorption ratio of 112.6% in the third quarter of 2016.

"This quarter, continued softness in the energy sector negatively impacted our aftermarket revenues, particularly in our operations in the south central part of the country," explained Rush.  "Additionally, the consolidation of several of our truck centers earlier this year has also impacted parts and service revenues when compared to the third quarter of 2015.  On a positive note, we are seeing some increased aftermarket activity on both coasts where construction remains strong.”

"We expect parts, service and body shop sales in the fourth quarter to remain fairly consistent with sales in the third quarter after factoring in the seasonal decline we typically experience during that quarter," Rush said.

"We continue to make progress on initiatives related to all-makes parts and service technology.  While still in the early stages of these initiatives, the market is responding positively to our efforts,” added Rush.  “Customers are gaining an understanding of how our all makes parts offerings and service technologies benefit their businesses.”

Truck Sales
U.S. Class 8 retail sales were 46,373 units in the third quarter, down 31% over the same time period last year, according to ACT Research.  Rush’s Class 8 sales were consistent with industry activity, decreasing 31.5% as compared to the third quarter of 2015 and accounting for 6.5% of the U.S. Class 8 truck market.  ACT Research forecasts U.S. retail sales for Class 8 vehicles to be 201,000 units in 2016, a 20.5% decrease compared to 2015. 

"Our Class 8 new truck sales continue to be impacted by significantly reduced demand from several large fleet customers and from challenges in the Class 8 truck market," Rush said.  “We are seeing hesitation from customers due to a choppy freight environment and general economic uncertainty.  That said, construction and refuse activity remains solid, and we are focused on gaining incremental sales from new customers despite tough market conditions.  In the fourth quarter, we expect our new Class 8 truck sales to be down slightly compared to the third quarter," Rush said.

For 2017, ACT Research currently forecasts U.S. Class 8 retail sales to be 154,000 units, down 23.4% compared to this year.  "Looking forward, we believe these forecasts to be accurate given the average age of Class 8 fleet vehicles and the challenging used truck market conditions," said Rush.  

“Fleets, dealers and manufacturers are all dealing with an over-supply of used trucks and attempting to balance excess inventory with today’s market pricing.  Our used truck inventory is as low as it has been in several years, and we believe we are well positioned for the current market dynamics and to support new truck sales.  We expect to continue to aggressively move inventory, even with market pressures on pricing and trade-in values.  In the fourth quarter, we expect used truck margins to remain below historical averages,” Rush continued.

Rush’s Class 4 through 7 medium-duty sales decreased 14.5% from the third quarter of 2015, accounting for 4.4% of the total U.S. market in the third quarter of 2016.  U.S. Class 4 through 7 retail sales were 56,499 units in the third quarter, which was flat compared to the third quarter of 2015.  

"Our medium-duty truck sales were down somewhat compared to the third quarter of 2015, but our overall medium-duty performance remains solid," said Rush.  "Construction is still a significant driver of medium-duty business, and we are seeing increased construction-related demand throughout the country, particularly in Texas and the Southeast.  With the continued decline in Class 8 sales activity, the market for medium-duty sales has grown even more competitive.  However, our ability to stock a variety of bodied-up medium-duty trucks continues to allow us to meet a wider range of our customers' immediate needs.”

ACT Research currently forecasts U.S. retail sales for Class 4 through 7 vehicles to reach 231,400 units in 2016 and 233,100 units in 2017.  "In the fourth quarter, we expect our medium-duty truck sales to be consistent with our third quarter results," Rush said.

Financial Highlights

In the third quarter of 2016, the Company’s gross revenues totaled $1.096 billion, a 15.3% decrease from gross revenues of $1.294 billion reported for the quarter ended September 30, 2015.  Net income for the quarter was $14.9 million, or $0.37 per diluted share, compared to net income of $19.9 million, or $0.48 per diluted share, in the quarter ended September 30, 2015.

Parts, service and body shop revenues were $336.5 million in the third quarter of 2016, compared to $360.7 million in the third quarter of 2015.  The Company delivered 3,024 new heavy-duty trucks, 2,469 new medium-duty commercial vehicles, 523 new light-duty commercial vehicles and 1,795 used commercial vehicles during the third quarter of 2016, compared to 4,412 new heavy-duty trucks, 2,889 new medium-duty commercial vehicles, 312 new light-duty commercial vehicles and 2,169 used commercial vehicles during the third quarter of 2015.

During the third quarter of 2016, the Company repurchased $13 million of its common stock and ended the quarter with $91.6 million in cash and cash equivalents.

Absorption Ratio
Management uses several performance metrics to evaluate the performance of its commercial vehicle dealerships and considers Rush Truck Centers’ “absorption ratio” to be of critical importance.  Absorption ratio is calculated by dividing the gross profit from the parts, service and body shop departments by the overhead expenses of all of a dealership’s departments, except for the selling expenses of the new and used commercial vehicle departments and carrying costs of new and used commercial vehicle inventory.  When 100% absorption is achieved, then gross profit from the sale of a commercial vehicle, after sales commissions and inventory carrying costs, directly impacts operating profit.

Management uses “Adjusted Total Debt” to reflect the Company’s estimated financial obligations less debt related to lease and rental fleet (L&RFD) and floor plan notes payable (FPNP), and “Adjusted Net (Cash) Debt” to present the amount of Adjusted Total Debt net of cash and cash equivalents on the Company’s balance sheet.  The FPNP is used to finance the Company’s new and used inventory, with its principal balance changing daily as vehicles are purchased and sold and the sale proceeds are used to repay the notes.  Consequently, in managing the business, management views the FPNP as interest bearing accounts payable, representing the cost of acquiring the vehicle that is then repaid when the vehicle is sold, as the Company’s credit agreements require it to repay loans used to purchase vehicles when such vehicles are sold.  The Company’s lease & rental fleet are fully financed and are either (i) leased to customers under long-term lease arrangements or (ii), to a lesser extent, dedicated to the Company’s rental business.  In both cases, the lease and rental payments fully cover the capital costs of the lease & rental fleet (i.e., the principal repayments and interest expense on the borrowings used to acquire the vehicles and the depreciation expense associated with the vehicles), plus a profit margin for the Company. The Company believes excluding the FPNP and L&RFD from the Company’s total debt for this purpose provides management with supplemental information regarding the Company’s capital structure and leverage profile and assists investors in performing analysis that is consistent with financial models developed by Company management and research analysts.  “Adjusted Total Debt” and “Adjusted Net (Cash) Debt” are both non-GAAP financial measures and should be considered in addition to, and not as a substitute for, the Company’s debt obligations, as reported in the Company’s consolidated balance sheet in accordance with U.S. GAAP.  Additionally, these non-GAAP measures may vary among companies and may not be comparable to similarly titled non-GAAP measures used by other companies.
