ISAPS Announces the Creation of a New Global Alliance to Address Patient Safety in Cosmetic Surgery, Medical Tourism, and Advanced Aesthetic Education

Including 40 National Plastic Surgery Societies, the ISAPS Global Alliance is formed to Protect the Safety of Patients and Lobby Governments for Stricter Laws Regarding Which Doctors Can Perform Cosmetic Surgery

NEW YORK, Nov. 10, 2016 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, or ISAPS, which represents the global plastic and aesthetic surgery community, announces the formation of a Global Alliance to establish a clear voice for the industry and address the important issue of patient safety.  Under the leadership of the new ISAPS President, Dr. Renato Saltz, the Alliance will have a physical and virtual presence to advise and consult on all concerns relating to cosmetic surgery on a global scale.

“We look forward to providing a voice for the international plastic surgery community under this Alliance. The talent in this new organization is incredible,” says President Saltz. “We serve our industry best when the efforts of all these national plastic surgery societies are combined on patient safety issues. My goal in the next two years is to narrow the international gap regarding standards of accreditation among different countries, cultures and surgeons,” states Dr. Saltz.  The Alliance is comprised of 40 Presidents of national plastic surgery societies and will represent the international community of aesthetic professionals that is underserved by other societies.

The inaugural ISAPS Global Alliance Forum assembled last week in Kyoto, Japan during the ISAPS biennial Congress of plastic and aesthetic surgeons to promote excellence in the field.  The Society Presidents attending this meeting established the following tenets to address the vacuum of international consensus for the following important issues:

  • One international voice for global aesthetic plastic surgery
United as one international voice, we represent the aesthetic plastic surgery community. Our benchmark tool is the ISAPS Global Survey which offers the best way to gather international aesthetic data and inform the public. By corralling our national society members, we strive to increase world attention and serve our members.

  • Patient Safety Representation Globally
ISAPS places patient safety as its highest priority.  We are all affected by any patient safety crisis, no matter the origin.  By combining efforts worldwide, we protect our members and most importantly, our patients.

  • Safe Medical Tourism  (SMT)
The topic of Safe Medical Tourism is of high concern among medical professionals. Uniting as the international authority, the ISAPS Global Alliance serves to develop standards on Safe Medical Tourism.  By focusing on the traveling patient, these standards will cover “across-the-board” operating procedures protecting patients no matter the country.

  • Education, Training & Accreditation
The Global Alliance recognizes the training diversity throughout its membership and seeks to unify standards through education and with the support of organizations such as the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities (AAAASF) and ISAPS committees.  The Alliance will create a “Residents & Fellows Forum” during society courses, symposia and biennial Congresses.
