Polk County Historical Society plans museum In former SouthCrest Bank building

CEDARTOWN, Ga., Jan. 31, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Cedartown Development Authority, the City of Cedartown and SouthCrest Bank announce the Development Authority has purchased the former downtown SouthCrest Bank building on West Avenue and the drive-through on South College Street. The Polk County Historical Society plans to relocate its museum to the former bank location.

“Because of its central location, convenient access, and ample parking, our former downtown branch is a perfect place for the Historical Society to house and display some of the most cherished memorabilia and records of early Cedartown and Polk County,” commented Linda Burch, Polk County Market Leader for SouthCrest Bank. “We’re proud to be involved with the Development Authority, the city, and the Historical Society to play a role in preserving our area’s rich history.”

Acknowledging a national trend showing more people are finding it convenient to bank online or with their smart phones, SouthCrest Bank announced last November the consolidation of its drive-through service at 435 South College Street into its full service branch bank’s drive-through on North Main Street. All employees at the site were relocated to the main office at 967 North Main Street.

Ellen Hester, President of the Polk County Historical Society commented, "While the first loyalty of the Polk County Historical Society is to the preservation of the Hawkes Children’s Library Building at 205 S. College Street, I look forward to having a much needed larger display area, along with ADA compliant access for visitors. In the future, PCHS hopes to have tour groups and school groups, along with local residents, visiting, researching and learning about our local history in the new West Avenue location."

On behalf of the City of Cedartown, Commissioner Dale Tuck added, "The city of Cedartown welcomes the opportunity to bring the Polk County Historical Museum to our downtown. This wonderful facility provides us the space to showcase numerous artifacts from Polk County and highlight our diverse but common past."
