Unilog Engages Agosto Inc. to Move its B2B e-Commerce Delivery Infrastructure to Google Cloud Platform

Unilog can create e-commerce sites faster, has increased uptime to more than 99 percent, and has reduced costs for itself and clients

MINNEAPOLIS, MN--(Marketwired - June 22, 2017) - Agosto Inc., a cloud services and development company and tier 1 Google Cloud Premier Partner, has completed an IT infrastructure redesign for Unilog that enables the company to leverage the public cloud to deliver its e-commerce and product data management solutions. Unilog is a global technology and services company that specializes in e-commerce solutions and enriched product catalogs for the business-to-business (B2B) marketplace.

Unilog engaged Agosto to help improve its business processes which were limited by running an on-premises, private cloud. They needed rapid deployments, unlimited scale, and reduced support costs for their customers. Agosto's team analyzed Unilog's existing application stack and determined they could modify it to support reduced operating costs, provide better scale, and accelerate client deployments using Google as a public cloud provider.

"We performed a gap analysis for architectural considerations that would support an updated design of Unilog's application stack," said Rick Erickson, executive vice president at Agosto. "We then validated performance and delivered production templates to accelerate their future client deployments."

Agosto laid out a strategic roadmap of recommendations for Unilog including:

  • Lift and shift from its private hosted environment to Google's public cloud
  • Move Virtual Machines (VMs) and optimize them for Google Cloud, specifically Google Compute Engine
  • Perform a GCP optimization analysis for utilization, spending and architecture
  • Optimize existing systems to reduce operating costs, analyzing and directing them to stand-up a multi-tenant version
  • Extend the updated architecture to leverage microservices to reduce total operating costs

The initial migration resulted in a 50 percent cost reduction for Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) vs. Amazon Web Services (AWS). Multi-tenancy improved operating costs and reduced Unilog's support costs. The company also reports improved uptime of its systems and enhanced security for its customers.

Before migrating to Google Cloud Platform, Unilog had more than 350 customers running in its private cloud environment, which required their IT department to run between 400-500 virtual machines (VMs). Agosto architected an identical environment leveraging Google Compute Engine.

"Previously it took four or five days to build an environment for each new customer, and Agosto was able to identify what changes we should make within our infrastructure to improve that process," said Swamy Mahesh, CTO, North America at Unilog. "With their help we've reduced that time significantly -- to about one day."

Unilog IT resources have been freed up to focus on more strategic projects, as they no longer need to manage hardware and infrastructure. This efficiency also extends to Unilog customers. Unilog estimates its customers have reduced the engineering resources previously allocated to manage infrastructure by approximately 25 percent. The company is onboarding clients more quickly and support costs have been reduced. Read about this project in more detail here.
