Alberta’s Highway Safety Goes Local

Edmonton company to maintain province’s road weather information system

EDMONTON, Alberta, Aug. 01, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Edmonton-based Campbell Scientific Canada have announced that they will take over the maintenance of the Province of Alberta’s 152 road weather information, camera, and digital messaging systems in the fall of 2017.  This multi-year maintenance project is a major part of a Road Weather Information System (RWIS) contract between Amec Foster Wheeler and Alberta Transportation. The stations to be maintained by Campbell Scientific Canada are critical to the province’s effort to ensure public safety on highways, enhance roadway maintenance efficiency, and reduce environmental impact.

“Our goal as a company has always been to provide the best measurement possible and we’re extremely excited to apply that principle in our own backyard,” said company President and CEO, Brian Day. “We live and breathe the weather in this province every day, so we understand what Albertans deal with and we look forward to playing a role in the safety of Alberta’s roads for the foreseeable future.”

Campbell Scientific Canada will maintain a network consisting of

  • 112 road weather information system stations.
  • 10 mobile road weather information system stations.
  • 17 digital messaging signs.
  • 3 road condition warning system stations.
  • 10 road camera stations.

The contract also includes the possibility to install up to 20 new stations over the next five years at the discretion of Alberta Transportation. These stations would be installed on Calgary’s Stoney Trail and Edmonton’s Anthony Henday Drive and would consist of

  • Up to 11 road weather information system stations.
  • Up to 9 road camera stations.

Alberta’s RWIS network gathers road and weather data in real-time and analyzes this information to report on current conditions and forecasts. These reports allow road maintenance personnel to plan their maintenance efficiently and to prepare for winter storm events. The RWIS network also provides real-time information and images to the public, allowing drivers to plan their trips and ensure they travel safely.
