NuoDB 3.0 Brings Elastic SQL to the Hybrid Cloud

With expanded cloud support and new active-active-active capabilities, NuoDB 3.0 bolsters application modernization efforts for leading software development organizations

CAMBRIDGE, MA--(Marketwired - September 06, 2017) - As application architectures migrate to cloud- and container-based environments, organizations seek databases that can support these modernization strategies without sacrificing the transactional consistency and SQL functionality their applications require. NuoDB, the elastic SQL database company for hybrid cloud applications, today announced NuoDB 3.0 which provides customers with flexible hybrid cloud deployment options to simplify their cloud on-ramp and ensure alignment between their database strategy and evolving product strategy. NuoDB 3.0 can be downloaded at www.nuodb.com/download.

NuoDB 3.0 extends its technology ecosystem integration, which currently includes support for Amazon Web Services and Docker containers, by adding support for Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, and Red Hat environments. In addition, NuoDB 3.0 can now operate in an active-active-active deployment across three Availability Zones, making it even easier for organizations to operate in hybrid or multi-cloud environments. The latest release also includes substantial improvements designed to optimize performance, including across multi-data-center environments.

"We selected NuoDB because we needed a database that could scale horizontally," said Toan Truong, lead systems engineer at Movemedical. "No other database can support active-active capabilities across data centers while preserving strict transactional consistency. With NuoDB's new ability to write simultaneously from three availability zones, we can improve performance and availability for our customers as we expand."

Road-tested elastic SQL database

Generally available and in production since 2013, NuoDB is a proven elastic SQL database for business-critical applications, designed to deliver the scale-out simplicity, elasticity, and continuous availability that cloud applications require with the transactional consistency and durability that databases of record demand. This latest release further extends such capabilities by enabling customers to deploy NuoDB directly on premises, and in hybrid or public cloud environments. The newly Red Hat certified container is fully supported on Red Hat Atomic Host, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, and Red Hat OpenShift and is available for download from Red Hat here. To see NuoDB operating on Red Hat OpenShift, go to www.nuodb.com/full-demo.

"Having a database designed to operate smoothly within a Red Hat OpenShift environment while still maintaining data persistence and strict transactional consistency is important for many of our customers," said Julio Tapia, director, OpenShift ecosystem, Red Hat. "NuoDB's peer-to-peer architecture is well-suited for a container-based infrastructure, and we're excited to provide this as an option to our customers."

Complexities demand distributed environments

Application complexity and diversity are driving the rising popularity of hybrid environments. Whether for migration, disaster recovery, continuous availability, or to serve applications running in multiple environments, the database layer must respond in tandem and match the changing requirements of the organization without losses to data, data consistency, or transactional capabilities. With NuoDB 3.0, customers can achieve all the benefits of an elastic SQL database as well as expanded support and improved performance within distributed environments.

Key enhancements include:

  • Active-active-active deployments across three availability zones.
  • Integration as an XA resource with distributed application environments coordinating via XA transactions enabling NuoDB to be included in distributed transaction coordination.

Performance optimization

As applications in a hybrid cloud or active-active deployment access the database, the transaction workload may shift from one environment to the other over time. NuoDB 3.0 provides critical workload management of transactions to optimize high performance needs. By empowering customers to address transaction coordination across distributed data management systems and achieve transaction performance optimization, customers can maintain availability and performance even among distributed, diverse, application environments.

Additional performance enhancements include:

  • Improved modular query optimizer enabling users to perform complex, sophisticated queries against an enterprise-class elastic SQL database without compromising database performance.
  • Substantial improvements to increase performance for OLTP write-intensive workloads.

"As customers look for opportunities to transition to the cloud, many struggle to align their application stack and database systems in a common cohesive strategy. Elastic SQL databases are designed to solve that very challenge providing rich SQL data access, preserving ACID compliant transactions, all while allowing the database to elastically scale out," noted Ariff Kassam, vice president of products, NuoDB. "With our latest release, we can take on the requirements of the most sophisticated architectures while helping our customers avoid vendor lock in and prepare for the future needs of their business and applications."
