SafeDNS Creates New Paradigm of Wi-Fi Security

The company provides the Wi-Fi industry with solutions meeting present-day demand for cyber security

Alexandria VA, Dec. 08, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Following its vision SafeDNS has been working for years on a range of solutions for the Wi-Fi industry. Recently the company's showcased these solutions at 2 of the largest and most important series of events for the Wi-Fi industry. The main SafeDNS message to Wi-Fi industry actors is that it's high time for them to join a new security paradigm.

Now much internet traffic goes via Wi-Fi and this is an upward trend. What do manufacturers of Wi-Fi routers do about proliferating web threats? Honestly, not much. Truth to tell, the manufacturers could have made Wi-Fi connection safer but they failed end users on the point. The manufacturers simply ignore an opportunity to make their hardware more secure.

They are stuck in an internet security paradigm of 30 years ago. The Wi-Fi equipment manufacturers are blind to the fact that the paradigm has long shifted. "The entire web has become full of garbage. The web has become a digital Detroit – if you look hard enough, you can find really compelling things there, but if you aren’t really careful – you can get mugged", this is a metaphor by Roger McNamee, a person impacting views of B.Gates and M.Zuckerberg. It vividly visualizes the trend.

Let us explain exactly what is wrong with Wi-Fi security. Most routers, Premise and SOHO level, lack the following. No means to control internet access, protect against malicious and phishing sites, block botnets, give alerts when security of user devices is compromised. With that in mind, can users possibly manage access to their Wi-Fi networks, ensure internet usage policy compliance, safeguard personal and corporate information, make sure their devices are not used for DDoS attacks? The obvious answer is no, users cannot.

An inbuilt sites blocking option of most routers allow blocking only HTTP sites, yet more than 50% of websites are HTTPS. And thanks to Google the number is growing. Nowadays a really efficient filtering system must support both, HTTP and HTTPS filtering.

Even if there's some filtering system on a Wi-Fi router it has no granular settings for parental control and web filtering, no customized per device filtering rules. And this happens in a world where an ordinary family of 3 people can have up to 15 devices connected to the web. Parents can't filter the internet differently for each family member. And on the home Wi-Fi router parents want to have individual filtering settings for little kids, teenagers and grown ups. The same is true for corporate and guest Wi-Fi networks – there's a need for a granular multi-policy filtering which is lacking on most routers.

On some of them you can manually add websites to a block list. Most users will give up at the second hundred! There are more than 300M websites and around 1B registered domains on the internet. What router can handle that? A high quality filtering system is supposed to be based on a real time updated categorization database with tens of millions of domains and billions of URLs in it. If the database contains cyber security-related categories which are constantly appended with emerging malware, then the filtering system can provide a layer of security – without users busying themselves with compiling lists of dangerous sites to block.

Setting up router security controls is a task for a sysadmin or a tech savvy user, not an ordinary one who has no idea what a MAC address is. The simpler the router security controls setup, the better – more people will deploy them to protect their Wi-Fi network users and monitor traffic usage.

Security market players, that already see the paradigm shift, are entering the Wi-Fi market with their secure devices offering end users most of the features mentioned above. Symantec and Bitdefender are already there with their smart Wi-Fi routers.

SafeDNS is the first to see the shift and lead the way for old-fashioned Wi-Fi equipment vendors to the new security paradigm. The company provides the manufacturers of Wi-Fi routers with an integration-ready solution allowing them to add to their equipment a set of useful features for granular multi-policy web content filtering and improve cyber security of users. A number of the Wi-Fi hardware vendors share the SafeDNS vision of the new paradigm:

  • D-Link
  • ZYXEL
  • Dovado
  • Fältcom

They have already adopted the SafeDNS solution for their Wi-Fi routers to make the internet safer for end users. These Wi-Fi equipment vendors look to the future where only secure will survive.
