Cloudian HyperStore 7 Multi-Cloud Data Management Unifies Public Cloud and On-Premises Storage

Scale-out cluster architecture enables global data management of files and objects across private and public clouds

SAN MATEO, Calif., Jan. 23, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Cloudian, an innovation leader in enterprise object storage systems, today announced HyperStore 7, a new version of its HyperStore scale-out storage system. HyperStore 7 bridges both on-premises and cloud environments, letting users manage data in both private and public clouds around the globe as a single, unified storage pool.

HyperStore 7 is a scale-out platform that lets users store, protect and search data from one management screen, no matter where the data physically resides. In a data center, HyperStore 7 can be deployed either as multiple appliances or on industry-standard servers to form a single, limitlessly scalable storage system. Now, users can also deploy HyperStore 7 software as an application in the public cloud to provide a single view of data across clouds and on-prem storage.

Key features of HyperStore 7 include:

  • Unified data management: Store, manage, protect and search data across clouds and on-prem environments from a single console
  • Access to data anywhere via a common API: Employ a single S3 API to access storage assets on-prem and in public clouds, including Microsoft Azure, Google GCP and Amazon AWS
  • Scale-out architecture: Deploy multiple HyperStore instances, either on-prem or in the cloud, to scale capacity, performance and availability
  • Converged data access: Store data in the native format of any public cloud, ensuring seamless data access for cloud-based applications
  • Merged files and objects:  Consolidate object data as well as Windows and Linux files to a single storage environment with Cloudian HyperFile

“IT managers are grappling with their big-budget data growth, which cannot be affordably managed with their Tier 1 storage on-premises, yet they can’t always use cloud,” said Greg Schulz, senior analyst of StorageIO. “Cloudian provides a simple-to-use yet cost-effective petabyte-scalable solution with data management that spans on-premises and cloud, including file and object storage access, all with the same HyperStore 7 software.”

Managing data across on-premises and cloud storage systems has proven vexing because cloud storage providers use their own APIs. This makes it difficult to optimize workloads across clouds and eliminates the possibility of flexibly leveraging multiple clouds for their unique features, geo-coverage and cost advantages.

HyperStore 7 overcomes this challenge by enabling cloud-storage access via a single API and a global namespace, allowing users to store and manage data across locations using a common set of tools. HyperStore 7 also provides metadata tagging and a single global view of data, allowing users to search across all locations to find and retrieve data.

“The multi-cloud world presents new challenges as well as great potential benefits for our customers,” said Dustin Smith, chief technologist at ASG. “Cloudian HyperStore 7 gives enterprise users the best of both worlds, combining scalable on-premises data management and cloud storage management into a single framework to eliminate barriers and let organizations derive the greatest value from each platform.”

“As our customers seek to unite on-premises and cloud data management, they demand solutions that eliminate barriers rather than create new ones,” said Brian Raposo, area vice president of the west at Technologent. “HyperStore 7 is the first solution we’ve seen that meets the enterprise IT manager’s need for limitless scale, cloud independence and file/object interchangeability.”

For workflows that require a tape-based archive, HyperStore 7 can also tier to the Spectra Logic BlackPearl converged storage system, an approach often used to deliver compliance with the SEC 17-4A specification or as insurance against a ransomware attack.

Tad Brockway, general manager, Azure Storage, Microsoft Corp. said, “Microsoft Azure customers benefit from the flexibility to manage data across storage types, both on-premises and in the cloud. Cloudian HyperStore 7 helps our mutual customers reduce risk and complexity by accessing data via a single API, benefiting from simplicity and consistency across their entire technology stack.”

“To effectively manage data across platforms and around the globe, IT managers need solutions that scale in every dimension, spanning on-premises and cloud storage, multiple geographies, and both files and objects,” said Michael Tso, CEO of Cloudian. “HyperStore 7 is the first to provide a scale-out architecture – with clustered storage controllers both on-prem and in the cloud – that creates a genuinely unified file and object storage environment.”

The HyperStore 7 platform is available now as software-defined storage and as a fully-supported appliance with integrated capacities ranging from 48TB to 840TB per device. The software can be deployed both on-premises and in the cloud. Cloudian HyperFile integrates with HyperStore 7 to provide file services that are fully interoperable with SMB (CIFS) and NFS protocols.

Compared with traditional Tier 1 storage, Cloudian HyperStore saves 70 percent on CAPEX by leveraging industry-standard servers and employing a scaling model that lets users start small and grow non-disruptively. Pricing for fully configured appliances, with storage, starts at less than half a cent per GB/month. A HyperFile Basic version software license is included with HyperStore 7.

Cloudian HyperStore and HyperFile are available from Cloudian, from Cloudian reseller partners worldwide and from Cloudian strategic partners, including Lenovo and HPE.
