GARDEN CITY, NY, Feb. 05, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Long Island Plastic Surgical Group in Garden City is pleased to announce that two LIPSG surgeons were recently appointed Chief of Plastic Surgery at area hospitals. Tommaso Addona, MD, FACS, was appointed Chief of Plastic Surgery at St. Joseph Hospital in Bethpage and Jerry W. Chang, MD, has been appointed Chief of Plastic Surgery at NewYork-Presbyterian Queens. These appointments are a tribute to the expertise, professionalism and dedication of the two physicians, and a fitting reflection of the innovation and leadership that embodies the nation’s oldest and largest private plastic and reconstructive surgery practice.

“The partners, faculty, administration and staff of LIPSG are extremely proud of Dr. Addona and Dr. Chang,” said Roger L. Simpson, MD, FACS, president of Long Island Plastic Surgical Group. “We know that they will bring extraordinary knowledge, experience and leadership to their respective roles. Long Island Plastic Surgical Group has a long and rich history of cultivating world-class surgeons and of fostering their development into great teachers and leaders, and we congratulate Dr. Addona and Dr. Chang on their accomplishments.”

Tommaso Addona, MD, FACS, graduated Summa Cum Laude from Binghamton University and obtained his medical degree with Honors in Plastic Surgery Research from Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Addona completed his residency in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at The Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York, followed by advanced training in Microvascular and Reconstructive Surgery at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City.

Jerry W. Chang, MD, a board certified plastic surgeon, graduated with honors from Duke University in 1998 and received his medical degree from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri, graduating with honors in Plastic Surgery, General Surgery, Urology, and Obstetrics/Gynecology. In 2009, he completed a combined residency in General Surgery and Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery at Yale University in Connecticut, where he also served as Chief Administrative Resident. During this time, Dr. Chang received advanced training in Microvascular and Reconstructive Surgery. Dr. Chang pursued further training in Aesthetic Plastic Surgery at Harvard Medical School/Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts.

Both surgeons are actively involved in medical volunteerism, treating adults and children around the world in need of plastic and reconstructive surgery. Dr. Addona was recently appointed to the Board of Directors of ReSurge International, an organization that provides reconstructive surgical care for poor children and adults who lack access, and builds surgical capacity in developing countries. Dr. Chang has traveled to Thailand as a medical volunteer with the non-profit volunteer organization Changing Children’s Lives, Inc.  Both surgeons have published and lectured extensively on diverse topics in plastic and reconstructive surgery.

Now in its 70th anniversary year, Long Island Plastic Surgical Group was established in 1948 by two World War II Army surgeons who met immediately following the war at Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn. Both having treated severely burned and wounded combat casualties, the physicians sought to continue their service to people who had been disfigured by traumatic injury, serious illness such as cancer, and birth defects including cleft palate. Their legacy, characterized by three tenets – strict attention to detail, the importance of excellent outcomes and commitment to the patient – has been carried on by several generations of physicians, including Dr. Simpson, who worked and trained with the founding physicians when he joined the practice in 1980. Now with 230 employees and 22 plastic surgeons, the practice provides an unrivaled resource for reconstructive and aesthetic plastic surgery, and patient and physician education.

Thoughtful, incremental growth and attention to the needs of the community have guided the expansion of this practice over seven decades of history. LIPSG is unparalleled in its scope of experience, dedication to education, and innovation in the field of plastic and reconstructive surgery.
