Patient-Friendly Breast Tumor Localization Now Available in Connecticut

Cianna Medical Continues to Expand Use of Innovative SAVI SCOUT® Technology

ALISO VIEJO, Calif., March 20, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Cianna Medical, Inc., the world leader in wire-free breast localization, announced the availability of wire-free radar localization for women undergoing breast conserving surgery at Norwalk Hospital in Connecticut. A nationally recognized community hospital that is part of Western Connecticut Health Network, Norwalk Hospital is using the SCOUT® Radar Localization System in place of wire localization during breast cancer surgery. This novel technology is available in over 230 hospitals nationwide and now for the first time in Connecticut.

SCOUT is the only wire-free breast localization system that uses radar to mark a lumpectomy or biopsy site, with no significant artifacts on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies. SCOUT is non-radioactive and non-magnetic, making it easy to use and providing unparalleled precision and accuracy.

Using SCOUT, surgeons can precisely target the affected tissue using its 360˚ detection capability to pinpoint its location within ±1mm, which can mean more successful surgeries, optimized breast conservation strategies and enhanced outcomes for women.

SCOUT is part of the comprehensive breast care program at Norwalk Hospital. The community hospital offers the latest advances in screening, diagnosis and treatment. Patients have access to exceptional clinical expertise from respected doctors, extensive support resources and a collaborative approach to care that is personalized.

“We want our patients to have excellent and compassionate care with the best outcomes. We’re glad we have this new technology to help deliver that care,” said Jeanne Capasse, MD, Norwalk Hospital.

The SCOUT System has been proven in over 28,000 procedures and has been shown to decrease patient discomfort, improve patient satisfaction, keep OR schedules on time by decoupling radiology and surgery schedules, reduce OR costs and increase operational efficiency.

“Norwalk Hospital is at the forefront of breast cancer care. We are excited to be able to offer a new, safe way to help make the day of a breast cancer procedure easier for our patients,” said Heather Frimmer, MD, Norwalk Hospital.

Melinda Hardy-Goff of Westport, Connecticut, chose Norwalk Hospital to help her fight her breast cancer because of the trust she has in the oncology program at the C. Anthony and Jean Whittingham Cancer Center. She observed what her grandmothers endured when they underwent breast cancer treatment many years ago. She was thankful to have a new technology available to her to help improve the delivery of care.

“I was lucky to have the opportunity to receive an advanced treatment. My experience was nothing compared to what my grandmothers went through. My care team helped me to feel confident as they walked me through each step of the procedure,” said Ms. Hardy-Goff. “Although I didn’t have the wire, I can imagine that my experience was so much more comfortable. I was nervous enough, and to think about a wire sticking out of my breast would have caused more worry.”

“At Cianna Medical, we are committed to increasing access to advanced techniques that help community hospitals ease the burden of breast cancer for women and their families,” said Jill Anderson, President and CEO of Cianna Medical. “We are excited to be a part of the quality, compassionate care hospitals like Norwalk provide to their patients.”

SCOUT has received significant recognition from medical societies and industry associations including, most recently, being honored as a Gold winner at the 2017 Medical Design Excellence Awards.
