Sony Unleashes a New Pocket-Sized Powerhouse with the RX100 VI

Photography News: Sony has reinvented its compact point-and-shoot series by upgrading the RX100 VI with an incredible 24-200mm lens while maintaining the same pocket-sized form

NEW YORK, June 05, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- B&H Photo would like to share the announcement of the Sony DSC-RX100 VI, the latest iteration of the popular pocket-sized point-and-shoot. Distinguishing itself from previous versions, this sixth edition sees the longest lens in the series yet, with an incredible 24-200mm-equivalent zoom, while retaining practically the same form factor. Beyond the new lens, there is still all of the same imaging excitement as previous RX100s, including UHD 4K video, HFR slow-motion recording, fast hybrid autofocus, and a refined set of controls.

At its core, much of the RX100 VI is still quite familiar, including the large 20.1MP 1" Exmor RS stacked CMOS sensor and the BIONZ X image processor that deliver stunningly sharp and clean imagery at sensitivities from ISO 80-12800. This combination enables the Fast Hybrid AF system to lock on in just 0.03 seconds, using a 315-point phase-detection system that covers 65% of the image area, and can even access the Eye AF function. This combination also helps to realize a 24 fps continuous shooting rate with full AE/AF. In regard to video, the RX100 VI delivers with UHD 4K using full pixel readout without any pixel binning. HLG HDR is now supported, as well as the BT.2020 color space and S-Log3 for wide color gamut, and high dynamic range scene capture and display with compatible televisions.

Balancing the imaging capabilities is the impressive new lens, a Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* 24-200mm equivalent f/2.8-4.5. This zoom features eight aspherical elements to reduce spherical aberrations and distortion throughout the entire range, for notable sharpness and accurate rendering. Despite the increased reach, the lens still retracts down to a sleek stature when not in use, ensuring the RX100 VI remains as pocketable as ever, and is quite bright throughout, reaching f/4 when hitting 100mm. Further advancing the quality of your shots is a vastly-improved Optical SteadyShot mechanism that is rated to four stops at 200mm.

Even though the body has a look and feel similar to previous editions, the RX100 VI offers some notable enhancements, such as a one-push access EVF, which allows the same 2.36m-dot EVF to be popped up and closed without any need to manually slide out or open certain components. The rear LCD is touch-capable now with Touch Shutter, Touch Pad AF, and Touch Focus functions and it can be tilted both 180° upwards and 90° downwards for added versatility. More customization is available in the menus and for the various control rings and buttons, and built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth provide added functionality when paired with a smart device.
