First Peoples’ Cultural Council Leverages Nuxeo’s Knowledge Management Capabilities to Preserve Indigenous Languages in British Columbia

Flexible Open Source Content Services Platform Enables Canadian Indigenous-Led Organization to Safeguard Cultural Assets

NEW YORK, June 12, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Nuxeo, the leading cloud-native Content Services Platform, today announced that the First Peoples’ Cultural Council, a Canadian Crown corporation based in British Columbia, is utilizing its platform for storing, managing, protecting, and providing access to Indigenous language assets.

The First Peoples’ Cultural Council operates FirstVoices, an online cultural initiative designed to archive and preserve Indigenous languages in the province of British Columbia, which has the greatest diversity of Indigenous languages in Canada. FirstVoices provides a dynamic platform for technically-savvy Indigenous youth to partner with their fluent-speaking elders to document their languages for future generations.

FirstVoices required a modern and secure platform architected to effectively capture, preserve, and protect Indigenous languages, dialects, and alphabets. FirstVoices needed to configure the platform to its specific requirements and host it in the cloud to meet the knowledge management needs of both its organization and the communities it serves. FirstVoices also wanted an open-source platform that offered full transparency on the product development process as a way to demonstrate integrity to the communities it serves.

“Many words are sacred within each of our communities, so it has always been important to us that our stakeholder groups be in control of their own language data, including who has access,” said Tracey Herbert, CEO of the First Peoples’ Cultural Council. “As we were developing FirstVoices 2.0, we found Nuxeo to be the best platform to address many key cultural considerations important to First Nations communities, such as where cultural assets are stored and how they’re managed.”

FirstVoices currently stores and manages approximately 400,000 multimedia language assets within the Nuxeo platform, including documents, photos, videos, and audio recordings. As the volume and variety of objects uploaded into the platform grows, the organization will continue to use Nuxeo’s workflow management capabilities, image recognition, and artificial intelligence features to validate what constitutes a “minimally viable record” to be stored and managed within FirstVoices. In addition, FirstVoices is leveraging permissions management functionality to help restrict access to certain files and objects. Learn more about the Nuxeo deployment at FirstVoices here.

“We’re proud to support First Peoples’ Cultural Council in this language preservation and knowledge management initiative that connects the past with the future,” said Eric Barroca, CEO of Nuxeo. “Our open-source approach was not only philosophically aligned with FirstVoices, but it also enabled their organization to configure the Nuxeo platform in ways that optimally delivered the capabilities necessary to serve their communities in a manner that is modern and secure.”
