Chromebooks and iPads Are Equally Valued in the K-12 Classroom Environment, According to Safeware

Factors such as price, durability, and reliability all influence which device educators prefer for their classroom.

Dublin, Ohio, June 27, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Back-to-school season is right around the corner and many school districts are purchasing new supplies and technology. Safeware, a leading provider of product protection and extended warranty solutions, took a look at the most common types of devices used in the K-12 classroom and their respective benefits and drawbacks.

Two of the most common devices in the classroom are iPads and Chromebooks, with 33% of Safeware-insured schools having iPads and 33% having Chromebooks. On average, Chromebooks cost around $300. Apple’s newest iPad has a $329 price tag by comparison. However, this does not account for the iPad’s stylus and keyboard components, which can add $150.

Some of the most important features to consider when purchasing classroom technology is the device’s performance and battery life. Apple’s new iPad features a next-generation Apple A10 Fusion processor, while typical Chromebook models use older processors, making them a bit slower. Chromebooks average around 10 hours of battery life, which is what the newest iPad also features.

Safeware’s data showcases that almost 18% of insured Chromebooks experienced a claim within the past 12 months, compared to nearly 11% of iPads. Almost 90% of claims received on both types of devices were due to accidental drops and fall, which are common in a classroom setting. Additionally, Safeware data also shows that iPads are more likely to be stolen than their Chromebook counterparts.

“As educators go to purchase new technology, there are many factors they have to take into consideration, such as price-point, features, and device durability,” says Safeware’s Chief Executive Officer, Bryan Schutjer. “With the increase of technology in the K-12 classroom, Safeware has customized its product protection plans to meet the ever-changing needs of schools.”

No matter what type of device schools decide to purchase for their students’ education, each have their benefits and drawbacks. Regardless, Safeware is proud to provide comprehensive product protection for devices in the K-12 classroom so that school districts can be confident that their students’ devices will be fully protected and ready for use.
