OAKLAND, Calif., March 26, 2019 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Black Girls CODE,  dedicated to teaching girls of color ages 7-17 about computer programming and technology, and creating our next generation of leaders, announced today it will hold three pop-up robotics workshops on Saturday, March 30, 2019, 9:00 – Noon. The workshops will be held at:

  • Sammamish High School, 100 140th Ave. SE, Bellevue, WA 98005
  • Seattle Central College, 1701 Broadway, Seattle, WA 08122
  • South Shore PreK-8, 4800 South Henderson, Seattle, WA 98118

Media are invited to attend the South Shore PreK-8 Workshop and may register here.

Workshop participants will have the opportunity to build and program a robot and/or circuits using block-based programming and/or JavaScript, depending on the activity, giving the girls the opportunity to code and create in real time. The girls will have a chance to bring their code to life and to dive into learning the fundamentals of CS through interactive technology.

“These workshops will begin our formal presence in the Seattle area, which we will expand on in mid-April with the official launch of our Seattle Chapter,” said Kimberly Bryant, founder and CEO of Black Girls CODE. “We appreciate the support we have received in the Seattle area from corporate partners such as Microsoft and the community at large and look forward to providing even more opportunities for girls in the region to access our unique technology programs and workshops.”

Microsoft has partnered with Black Girls CODE to accelerate the creation of the Seattle chapter, investing $250,000 in the partnership. A Microsoft representative stated the company wants to ensure, “Girls of color .. have opportunities to learn computer science.”

The Seattle workshops follow closely on Black Girls CODE’s significant recognition at the recent SXSW Conference, held March 8-13 in Austin.  Among its SXSW accolades and involvement; Black Girls CODE received a SXSW Community Service Award and Bryant was inducted into the SXSW Hall of Fame during the 22nd Annual Interactive Innovation Awards Ceremony.
