Smithfield Foods Donates More Than 42,000 Pounds of Protein to Feed More

Donation Part of Smithfield’s 2019 Helping Hungry Homes® Tour

RICHMOND, Va., April 18, 2019 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Smithfield Foods, Inc. has donated more than 42,000 pounds of protein to Feed More. Smithfield’s contribution was part of the company’s 2019 Helping Hungry Homes® donation tour. Helping Hungry Homes® is Smithfield’s signature hunger-relief initiative focused on alleviating hunger and helping Americans become more food secure. The donation, equivalent to more than 169,000 servings, will help families fight hunger in Central Virginia.

“There is a lot of need in Central Virginia—one in seven of our neighbors is food insecure, meaning that nearly 200,000 individuals do not know when or from where they will receive their next meal,” said Doug Pick, president and CEO of Feed More. “This generous donation from Smithfield’s Helping Hungry Homes® program helps us continue to distribute nutritious food to our neighbors who are struggling to consistently put food on the table.”

This is the 17th large-scale protein donation made by Smithfield to food banks across the country during its 2019 Helping Hungry Homes® donation tour. Since the program’s inception in 2008, Smithfield has provided more than 120 million servings of protein to food banks, disaster relief efforts, and community outreach programs nationwide.

“As a Virginia-based food company, we are passionate about providing this much-needed protein to our neighbors suffering from hunger,” said Jonathan Toms, associate manager of charitable initiatives for Smithfield Foods. “With this donation, we are honored to further our company’s social purpose and to support the vitality of a community we call home.”
