The rental housing provider SATO is exploring new opportunities to make its residents’ everyday lives and mobility easier and more climate-friendly. Vehicle sharing and electric vehicles are transforming transport and at the same time providing apartment building residents with new alternatives to car ownership. SATO and the Climateinfo initiative of the Helsinki Region Environmental Services Authority (HSY) will be piloting pedal electric cargo bike sharing at four apartment buildings during the autumn and winter.
- It’s important for us to try out new approaches that can help us make our residents’ everyday lives easier and more climate-friendly. Urbanisation increases the need for housing-related services, and this bike sharing pilot enables us to find out how a service like this would work in practice and best meet out residents’ needs, says SATO Partnership Manager Niklas Rosti.
SATO and HSY’s Climateinfo will use the pilot to collect information on what kinds of arrangements and information provision are required for the introduction of shared cargo bikes and who the bikes are used by at apartment buildings and for what kinds of purposes. The four-month pilot begins in the autumn.
- The bike-sharing scheme will enable SATO residents to try out how an electric cargo bike works for them personally without having to worry about investing in or maintaining a bike, says Petteri Nisula, Project Manager, Mobility, HSY Climateinfo.
- We conducted a try-out at four Helsinki and Espoo apartment buildings in the summer and already gained a lot of valuable information on issues such as provision of instructions and the bike locking system. The pilot implemented this autumn and winter will give us important information about bike use during more challenging seasons, says Nisula.
The project to introduce shared cargo bikes in rental housing companies is funded by the Ministry of the Environment and sparring for the pilot is provided by the Place to Experiment platform.
