Fairfax Africa Holdings Corporation: Third Quarter Financial Results

TORONTO, Oct. 31, 2019 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Fairfax Africa Holdings Corporation (TSX: FAH.U) announces a net loss of $32.3 million in the third quarter of 2019 ($0.54 net loss per diluted share), compared to a net loss of $12.0 million in the third quarter of 2018 ($0.19 net loss per diluted share), reflecting net unrealized losses on investments in the quarter.

Highlights in the third quarter of 2019 included the following:

  • Net loss of $32.3 million included net foreign exchange losses of $18.6 million and a net change in unrealized losses on investments of $15.7 million, principally from a decrease in the market price of the company's investment in Atlas Mara ($20.9 million), partially offset by a $5.0 million increase in the market price of the company's investment in Consolidated Infrastructure Group.

  • At September 30, 2019 common shareholders' equity was $508.6 million, or book value per share of $8.54, compared to $603.1 million, or book value per share of $9.60, at December 31, 2018.

During the third quarter of 2019 the company purchased for cancellation 971,197 subordinate voting shares, under the terms of the normal course issuer bid, for a net cost of $7.1 million ($7.27 per subordinate voting share). There were 60.3 million and 62.9 million weighted average shares outstanding during the third quarters of 2019 and 2018 respectively. At September 30, 2019 there were 29,549,266 subordinate voting shares and 30,000,000 multiple voting shares outstanding.
