Modeling right whales distribution with digital mapping to better evaluate risk and management in Canada

NARW_Occ_20152023_All

The probability of presence of North Atlantic Right Whales (Eubalaena glacialis) in the Gulf of St. Lawrence for the months of April to December, based on sightings from 2015 to 2023. These maps are overlapped with human activities such as fishing and marine traffic to assess when and where risk of entanglement or ship strike is the highest, and how much risk can we reduce with protection measures. Map created by Alexandra Cole, CWF fisheries management specialist, using ArcGIS Pro software by Esri.
