The Finnish Ambassador in India, Asko Numminen, and Minister Poongothai Aladi Aruna representing the state of Tamil Nadu were guests of honour at the event. The construction of the manufacturing plant producing mobile phone chargers was commenced in the autumn of 2006, and the first customer deliveries were carried out at the beginning of June. By now, the plant has already manufactured almost three million chargers. “The construction project has progressed according to the planned schedule and budget. The value of the capital expenditure is approximately EUR 9 million,” says Arto Mäkelä, General Manager of Salcomp's operations in India. Salcomp's charger manufacturing plant in India is located in the Nokia Telecom Park in the state of Tamil Nadu, in the eastern part of India. Currently, the plant employs over 800 people, and the intention is to increase the number of staff gradually up to roughly one thousand employees within 2007, and over 2,000 employees during 2008. The surface area of the production building is some 12,000 square meters, “Our objective is to increase the production capacity gradually up to 50 million chargers by the end of this year, and it can be raised to approximately 100 million chargers,” Arto Mäkelä says. The leased land extension also allows expansion of the production building, should that become necessary at a later date. “Building a charger plant in India was an important strategic decision for Salcomp. India is one of the world's most rapidly growing mobile phone markets, and Chennai is developing into a significant cluster with regard to the entire global mobile phone industry. Many of our main customers have already begun or are about to begin production in Chennai. Furthermore, there are suppliers of raw materials and components as well as skilled personnel in the area. For the time being, we are the only important mobile phone charger manufacturer engaging in production in India. Our presence in India gives us a competitive edge that we intend to utilize in full,” says Markku Hangasjärvi, President and CEO. In addition to the Indian market, the new plant will serve Salcomp's customers globally. It also enables the strengthening and balancing of Salcomp's global production and logistics. Prior to this, Salcomp has already established production plants in China and Brazil. The total capacity now is more than 300 million chargers per year. In connection with the inauguration, Salcomp told about a contribution to a program for young mothers in the state of Tamil Nadu. The target of the program is to support the wellbeing of the mothers by increasing the knowledge of factors influencing the health.
