SWECO wins environmental contract on Sri Lanka 

SWECO has been given responsibility for setting up an effective wastewater
system in and around the Sri Lankan capital city of Colombo. The contract is
worth over EUR 2.8 million.

Many areas of Sri Lanka lack functioning systems for wastewater treatment and a
large share of the contaminated water and raw sewage from industries and
households is discharged directly into the sea. Two new wastewater treatment
plants, twelve pumping stations and 200 km of pipe will now be built and
installed to improve the situation in and around the capital city of Colombo.
SWECO has been chosen to supervise the construction process, which will continue
for the next four years. 

”This is a step in the right direction. There is an urgent need for other
similar projects on Sri Lanka and in its neighbouring countries,” says Bernt
Norén, Project Manager at SWECO.

SWECO has previously been involved in designing the wastewater treatment plants
and piping system. Both the earlier and new assignments are being financed by
Sida, the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency.
