Bolt's 100-Meter World Record is Set On a Mondo Track

NEW YORK, June 2, 2008 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) -- Once again, a world record has been set on a Mondo track. Usain Bolt's stunning 9.72 seconds in this weekend's Reebok Grand Prix men's 100-meter race was recorded on a Mondo Super X Performance track.

The new record, which still must be ratified, would better the existing mark by .02 seconds. But Bolt, a Jamaican, wasn't the only competitor posting fast marks on the Mondo surface at Icahn Stadium. Jamaican sprinter Veronica Campbell-Brown, the women's world 100 meter champion, ran the year's fastest time, 10.91, in that event, and Paul Kipsiele Koech of Kenya ran 8:01.85 in the 3000-meter steeplechase, setting the U.S. all-comers record. Wallace Spearmon Jr. of the U.S. ran the second-fastest 200 meters of the year with a time of 20.07.

Icahn Stadium is one of only four track and field venues in the U.S. and 64 internationally to receive the prestigious IAAF Class I certification. The $42 million facility is located on Randall's Island, a 480-acre park between Manhattan, the Bronx and Queens, in New York's East River.

"The Reebok Grand Prix results are a testament to the performance capabilities of Mondo's Super X Performance track and our dedication to developing the fastest tracks in the world," said Federico Stroppiana, president of Mondo North and South America. "Many athletes have achieved faster times when running on Mondo versus other surfaces, and it shows in the nearly 230 world records and countless national and personal bests that have been set on Mondo tracks."

The world's top track for more than 30 years, Mondo Super X Performance has been installed at more than 1,100 venues globally. Recognized around the world as the fastest, most durable and environmentally safest track available, it has been used in the past eight Olympic Games, and Mondo is the official supplier to the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing for athletic tracks.

Mondo's Super X Performance track was developed to maintain its initial physical properties, so it provides consistent performance throughout its life. The vulcanized natural rubber surface provides maximum elasticity and unparalleled durability, and its embossed, textured finish makes it extremely easy to maintain with no resurfacing required. The high-performance track is renowned for its shock absorption and optimal energy return, and its ideal blend of speed and comfort minimizes the occurrence of injuries.
