MADRID, Spain, June 30, 2009 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Telvent (Nasdaq:TLVT), the IT company for a sustainable and secure world, announced today that the company has been selected by the Companhia Paulista de Trens Metropolitanos (CPTM) of Sao Paulo to modernize the power supply control systems for the Brazilian urban train lines. The project, valued at 24.5 million euros, is intended to contribute to the government's objective of doubling the present total of 1.6 million daily users to up to 3 million by 2014.
Over the course of two and a half years, Telvent will deploy a series of specialized systems and services that will supply electrical power to 260 kilometres of six CPTM lines, fulfilling the specified free-market energy requirements. CPTM will have the capacity to adapt to estimated and contracted power demand for these lines and ensure increased reliability and speed during the operation and control of electrical urban trains systems. In addition to having a positive impact in terms of enhanced service for metropolitan transportation users, this will also assure compliance with current occupational safety regulations for the benefit of transportation system operators.
CPTM has made a significant commitment towards public transportation as the sustainable alternative, now and in the future, in a city like Sao Paulo, which has the highest population and therefore the greatest impact on the Brazilian economy. "It is highly gratifying for us to participate in projects of this magnitude, projects which not only offer viable solutions for citizens, but also promote public transportation and energy management thereof as a sustainable alternative for major cities," stated Manuel Sanchez, Telvent Chairman and Chief Executive Officer.
The system to be implemented and commissioned into operation by Telvent will be managed using remote control from the Bras supervisory control center in Sao Paulo, and is based on Telvent OASyS technology, the SCADA system for real-time data acquisition and control. This centralized management and control will optimize all urban trains systems and equipment operation in addition to enhance security and facilitate real-time critical infrastructure related decision-making.
Telvent reinforces its position as the reference for basis city infrastructure projects in transportation and energy which are the backbone of any economy, even in periods of crisis.
