Real Solutions for Water-based Metalworking Fluids

CLEVELAND, May 23, 2013 - Lubrizol Additives, a business segment of The Lubrizol Corporation, gave three presentations at the 2013 annual conference of the Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers (STLE) in Detroit discussing recent innovations in water-based metalworking fluid technologies. With decades of experience in water-based formulations, Lubrizol experts are poised to offer real solutions to customers for both metal processing and metal protection that meet changing market demands.

In recent years, the demand for more rapid delivery of goods has meant an increase in metal machining efficiencies. To accommodate the increased speed of manufacturing, metal processing fluids need to provide maximum performance and increased flexibility to handle a wide variety of metal types. In addition, emerging regulatory requirements and security of supply strains have put pressure on metalworking fluid formulators to utilize more water-based technologies to meet these challenges.

Jon Ridgway, global business manager for Lubrizol's metalworking business said that "Manufacturers around the world are looking for processing fluids and rust preventives that minimize the impact on the environment, improve worker safety, and improve operational efficiency in manufacturing and flexibility in protecting metal surfaces." Lubrizol metalworking experts have developed a full product line of innovative emulsifier chemistries that were reviewed in three papers at the recent 2013 STLE conference. These additive chemistries deliver a real-world solution, enabling metalworking fluid formulators to easily incorporate water-based metal protection and processing additive technologies into their manufacturing processes.

One recent regulatory requirement is a reduction in VOC (volatile organic compound) by the South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD), Rule 1144, which is starting to spread across the country. Recently, the Ventura County Air Pollution Control District proposed new rule 74.31 with VOC restrictions identical to those of Rule 1144 and similar air quality mandates have already been introduced in New Jersey and Illinois.

According to Janet Kay, Lubrizol global commercial manager, metal protection, "Environmental concerns initiated by the State of California are a bellwether for legislative trends around the world. Lubrizol's family of water-based metal protectants, including AQUALOX(TM) 2335, AQUALOX 2286S and AQUALOX 240, provide flexibility and technology solutions to enable customers to develop high-performance rust preventives to meet such stringent VOC and heavy metal requirements." Lubrizol is also developing a new acrylic-based wax alternative chemistry that provides a clear, durable, long-lasting rust preventive film.

"Our market research indicates that end users are increasingly interested in advancing their water-based metal processing fluids. They need coolants that last longer and provide flexible and differentiated performance for a wide range of metals and machining operations," stated Derek Phillips, Lubrizol global commercial manager, metal processing.  Lubrizol metalworking scientists have developed a wide range of water-based metal processing additive packages and performance enhancing components, which includes emulsifiers such as Lubrizol® 5625, Lubrizol 5620B and Lubrizol 5629 that allow for maximum flexibility for metalworking formulators.

More information on the basics of emulsifiers, including an easy-to-understand explanation of the hydrophilic-lipophilic balance, can be found in the upcoming webinar "Emulsifiers 101" that will be hosted by STLE on June 5th, 2013. A second webinar ("Emulsifiers 201") delves into more detail on analytical testing methods, helpful tips on formulating with current emulsifier technologies and the new emulsifiers on the horizon.
