The Apache® Software Foundation Announces Keynote Speakers for Community Over Code Glasgow 2026

Open source leaders in software engineering education, sustainability, and the games industry to headline ASF's flagship conference, October 11–14 in Glasgow, Scotland

Wilmington, DE, Sept. 01, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Apache Software Foundation (ASF), the global home of open source software the world relies on, today announced the keynote speaker lineup for Community Over Code, taking place October 11–14, 2026 in Glasgow, Scotland.

The three keynotes span open source education, ecosystem sustainability, and the intersection of interactive technology with national economic policy:

  • Stephen Walli, adjunct faculty at Carnegie Mellon University teaching open source software engineering, opens the conference with a look at how open source communities can double as engineering classrooms. His talk “Open Source Software Engineering Education in an AI Encumbered World” draws on six years of experience building Semesters of Code, a program that embeds undergraduates as mentored contributors inside large open source software projects, and asks what that model looks like as AI reshapes how software gets written.
  • Vlad-Stefan Harbuz, Executive Director of the Software Stewardship Lab and an open source sustainability researcher, brings a sustainability lens to the conference's second day. Harbuz directs the Open Source Pledge, which has raised more than $7.27 million for open source maintainers, and is pursuing a PhD at the University of Edinburgh on the ethics and epistemology of open source software.
  • Brian Baglow, CEO of the Scottish Games Network, makes the case for interactive technology as core economic infrastructure rather than a niche entertainment category with his keynote “Ecosystem Eats Industry: Building The Interaction Economy.” A core member of the original Grand Theft Auto development team at DMA Design and Rockstar Games, Baglow is the lead architect of Scotland's National Games Action Plan and the force behind the More Than Games movement. As an "Ecosystem Architect," he works at the intersection of creative studios and national policy.
