Northrop Grumman Receives Contract to Upgrade B-52H Countermeasures System

ROLLING MEADOWS, Ill., July 11, 2000 (PRIMEZONE) -- Northrop Grumman Corporation's (NYSE:NOC) Electronic Sensors and Systems Sector (ES3) has been awarded a $2.1 million development contract by the Warner Robins Air Logistics Center to upgrade the B-52H AN/ALQ-155 electronic countermeasures system.

The total upgrade program includes development, production, spares and support equipment valued at $180 million to be incrementally funded during the next six to 10 years.

The upgraded AN/ALQ-155 system will integrate proven hardware and software components from the AN/ALQ-135, AN/ALQ-165 and other advanced electronic countermeasures systems to provide improved reliability and maintainability, while significantly enhancing the capabilities to counter modern threats.

"This contract award signifies both Warner Robins Air Logistics Center's and Northrop Grumman's commitment to modernize the aging jammer system to enable advanced protection and improved sustainment," said Bill Ober, vice president-RF Electronic Warfare Programs at Northrop Grumman's Defensive Systems Division in Rolling Meadows, Ill.

The current system has been protecting B-52 aircrews since the mid-1960's and was originally built by the Hallicrafters Company as the ALT-13. The system was later upgraded and designated the ALT-28. In the mid-1970's, a receiver and sensor integration capabilities were added and the countermeasures suite was redesignated the AN/ALQ-155.

Northrop Grumman ES3, headquartered in Baltimore, Md., is a world leader in the design, development, and manufacture of defense electronics and systems, precision weapons, airspace management systems, space systems, marine systems, and automation and information systems.
