BETHPAGE, N.Y., August 16, 2000 (PRIMEZONE) -- Northrop Grumman Corporation's (NYSE:NOC) Integrated Systems Sector (ISS) has been awarded a $41.9 million contract to produce 17 wing center sections for the U.S. Navy's EA-6B Prowler electronic warfare aircraft.
The wing center sections will help maintain the service life of the Prowler until the U.S. military's next-generation tactical jamming platform is identified and produced. Deliveries of the 17 wing center sections begin in March 2002 and end the following February. The contract includes an option for 10 more units, valued at $31.1 million, with deliveries to begin in March 2003, if exercised.
The wing center section absorbs a major portion of the impact of launches and landings on aircraft carriers. The EA-6B, which is flown by both the Navy and U.S. Air Force, is one of the most heavily used aircraft in the country's military inventory and is scheduled to remain in service until approximately 2015.
The EA-6B electronically jams enemy radar and communication systems or destroys them using high speed antiradiation missiles that home in on radar beacons.
