Los Angeles Orders 80 "UniLinx" Wireless Data Communications Cards

BELLEVUE, Wash., August 29, 2000 (PRIMEZONE) -- Unity Wireless Corporation (OTCBB:UTYW) has received an order for 80 UniLinx wireless communications cards to support the City of Los Angeles Department of Transportation requirements.

UniLinx will provide a two-way wireless communication link between the City of Los Angeles Traffic Management Center and 50 remote variable message signs and 30 traffic controllers. Data is transmitted over the Internet using the data capabilities of the CDPD (Cellular Digital Packet Data) network deployed in Los Angeles by Unity Wireless' partner, AT&T Wireless.

"We found the UniLinx units and the CDPD network to be extremely stable and reliable having evaluated the technology over the past six months," said Mr. An Nguyen, Project Manager - Passenger Information Systems, Department of Transportation, City of Los Angeles. "These qualities were very influential in our decision to purchase additional units."

The wireless communication system to the variable message signs first requires that buses, outfitted with a transducer, cross over an intersection which triggers a location signal to the Traffic Management Center. The signal, indicating time and location data, is then sent wirelessly to UniLinx-enabled variable message signs at bus shelters. Commuters will be able to know when buses are arriving at their location and other information, such as reasons for delays.

In traffic controllers, UniLinx allows traffic engineers to have immediate, proactive control over an intersection's traffic controller. This control, helps to facilitate the efficient movement of traffic. UniLinx also monitors alarm events such as power failure, temperature fluctuation or door openings.

"The dual applications in this order clearly indicates the flexibility of our UniLinx wireless technology platform," comments Tom Dodd, President of Unity Wireless Corporation. "The sales to Los Angeles have also generated interest from other cities. We are now demonstrating UniLinx for a variety of additional transportation and industrial applications."
