Northrop Grumman Awarded Contract for Enhanced AN/ALQ-162 Systems for Egyptian Air Force Apache Helicopters

MELBOURNE, Australia, Feb. 12, 2001 (PRIMEZONE) - AUSTRALIAN INTERNATIONAL AIR SHOW 2001 - Northrop Grumman Corporation's (NYSE:NOC) Electronic Sensors and Systems Sector (ES3) has received a $15 million foreign military sales (FMS) contract from the U.S. Navy for the enhanced AN/ALQ-162(V)6.

This award exercises an option of a previous FMS contract from the Navy. It will provide the Egyptian Air Force AH-64D helicopters with the AN/ALQ-162(V)6, marking the first time it has been selected to protect the Apache helicopter.

The AN/ALQ-162 is an internally mounted, high-band radio frequency countermeasures system. Nearly 700 systems have been delivered to all three branches of the U.S. military and several international users. In addition to the Apache, the system is being flown on the Blackhawk, Chinook and MH-53 helicopters as well as the F-16, F/A-18, AV-8B and C-130 aircraft.

"We are very pleased that the Egyptian Air Force has placed its confidence in the AN/ALQ-162(V)6 for protection of its valuable Apaches and the crews that fly them," said Bill Ober, vice president-Radio Frequency Electronic Warfare Programs at Northrop Grumman's Defensive Systems Division in Rolling Meadows, Ill. "The addition of this system will add significantly to the mission capability of this formidable aircraft while providing our customer with increased threat handling capabilities at a reasonable cost."

The enhanced system incorporates the latest in microwave power module technology that will more than double the system's output. System hardware and software changes have been designed to permit low-cost retrofits of the enhancements to older versions of the AN/ALQ-162(V)1.

Northrop Grumman ES3, headquartered in Baltimore, Md., is a world leader in the design, development, and manufacture of defense electronics and systems precision weapons, airspace management systems, space systems, marine systems, logistics systems, and automation and information systems.
