MELVILLE, N.Y., Feb. 21, 2001 (PRIMEZONE) -- Northrop Grumman Corporation's (NYSE:NOC) Oceanic and Naval Systems business unit here has been awarded a $22.5 million contract by the U.S. Naval Sea Systems Command, Arlington, Va., to provide five AN/SPQ-9B shipboard radars plus an update kit for a sixth radar system.
The contract calls for Northrop Grumman to fabricate, assemble, inspect, test and deliver five lightweight configuration, low-rate initial production AN/SPQ-9B radar systems and one lightweight antenna engineering change kit to convert a previously delivered AN/SPQ-9B heavyweight antenna radar to the more efficient configuration.
"The AN/SPQ-9B is a multimode, X-Band, narrow beam pulse Doppler radar that can detect and track known and projected low-flying antiship missiles that are difficult to detect because they fly only a few feet above the water," said Robert Anderson, general manager, Long Island Operations, Northrop Grumman Norden Systems.
"This radar also has the unique ability to identify threats in heavy clutter while simultaneously providing detection and tracking of surface targets and beacon responses."
The engineering change kit provides a lighter weight electronically steered array antenna, reducing weight by more than 1,000 lbs. from the previous AN/SPQ-9B system. It also increases the data rate while supporting gun fire control missions.
The five radar systems are slated to go aboard the aircraft carrier CVN-69 and LPD-17 class ships.
Work will be performed in Melville, N.Y., and is expected to be completed in the third quarter of 2002.
