Telelogic Expands Relationship with Volvo Due to Success of Next Generation Telematics System

Volvo On Call Developed Using Telelogic Tau Visual Modeling Solution

MALMO, Sweden, Jan. 15, 2002 (PRIMEZONE) -- Telelogic (Stockholm Exchange:TLOG), the leading global provider of solutions for advanced software and systems development, today announced that Telelogic Tau SDL was selected by Volvo Technological Development Corporation as their visual development tool to engineer Volvo's revolutionary new in-vehicle communication (telematics) system called Volvo On Call. Telelogic Tau is the leading toolset for analyzing, designing, implementing and testing reliable advanced software systems.

One of the greatest challenges for Volvo and other automakers has been the rapid introduction of in-vehicle software and computers, said David Hellstrom, group leader at Volvo Technological Development Corporation (VTD) in Gothenburg, Sweden.

"When the discussions about telematics were initiated within Volvo, I saw large advantages in using a visual modeling tool," Hellstrom said. Following a tool evaluation, they chose Telelogic Tau SDL Suite.

"After building a prototype, very early on we were able to run simulations of its functionality - without having the hardware ready," said Project Manager Laurent Colpier. The team also recognized advantages of using the SDL code as documentation, which saved the team a lot of time compared to documenting a system developed in textual programming languages, such as C.

"The Automotive industry continues to rapidly embrace some of the most advanced technology available on the market, said Ingemar Ljungdahl, Telelogic's Chief Technology Officer. "The flexibility and robustness of our tools can help dramatically automate the advanced software and systems development lifecycle which is critical to ensure competitiveness in the fast paced, change-oriented auto industry."

Increased Future Reliance on Telelogic's Solutions "It is also easier to get an overall view of the system, which facilitates discussion and decision-making. Everyone involved - end customer, developers, project managers and product owners - could be involved at an early stage and truly be part of the development," Colpier added. "For the next generation, we will use Telelogic Tau SDL Suite even more."

By taking advantage of Telelogic's training courses, Volvo was able to ensure a fast and efficient implementation. Telelogic also provided Volvo with specialized consulting services.

"As always, the deadlines are tough, and to lower the risks of introducing a new tool, we relied on Telelogic's services. This enabled a smooth integration with our operating system and helped us see the advantages of using SDL in a real-time project," according to System Designer Claes Pihl.

In order to deliver new concepts to the market more quickly, the development team also looked to other tools from Telelogic to make their organization more efficient.

"We recently decided to implement Telelogic DOORS(r) to improve our requirements management process," said Hellstrom, who believes DOORS will help them improve the quality of their products as well as their development processes.

Volvo is also considering use of full family of the Telelogic Tau UML products as well. "We hope to use both UML and SDL in the future. Graphical tools and languages facilitate both development work and maintenance, while simultaneously shortening the development time," Hellstrom concluded.

Volvo On Call Volvo On Call is an integrated GSM telephone with a built-in GPS for precision satellite navigation and location. At the touch of a button, drivers can receive safety and emergency assistance, traffic and route information and even concierge-type services. For more information, please visit or

Telelogic Tau SDL Suite and Telelogic DOORS Telelogic Tau SDL (Specification and Description Language) Suite is the world's leading real-time software development tool according to industry analyst group Venture Development Corporation in its latest industry report entitled "Embedded Software Development Tools." Tau SDL is based on the object-oriented design language SDL and the trace language MSC, both of which are formal, visual and internationally standardized languages. The suite consists of a graphical editor and syntax analyzer, a simulator and validator, and several optimized code generators for compilation to code suitable for implementation in real- time and embedded systems. SDL is the only graphical specification language that is both formal - it has been standardized by the ITU-T (Z.100) - and object-oriented.

DOORS is a multi-platform, enterprise-wide requirements management tool designed to capture, link, trace, analyze and manage a wide range of information to ensure a project's compliance with specific requirements and standards. DOORS is the world's leading requirements management tool according to the latest Standish Group industry report entitled, "What are your requirements? 2000".
